This English guide follows the Korean calculator logic and preserves the Korean won amounts, statutory thresholds, tax rates, fee tables, vehicle categories, and operating assumptions used by the source page.

2026 renewal-window reform

The source page reflects the 2026 reform: renewal and periodic aptitude-test windows move from the old January 1 to December 31 expiry-year rule to 6 months before and 6 months after birthday. The calculator also compares that birthday-based result with the legacy December 31 end date where the transition rule can matter.

Procedure depends on license class and age. Type 1 licenses need periodic aptitude testing. Type 2 licenses under age 70 are simple renewals without aptitude testing, while Type 2 holders aged 70 or older become aptitude-test targets. Cycle length is 10 years under age 65, 5 years from age 65, and 3 years from age 75.

  • Drivers aged 75 or older need senior cognitive screening and 2 hours of senior-driver traffic-safety education before renewal.
  • The cycle is determined from age at the previous issue or renewal date in the Korean model.
  • Some online renewal paths are available through safedriving.or.kr or Government24 when no physical visit is required.

Fees, physical exam, and penalties

The fee table is preserved. Type 1 normal fee is KRW 16,000, Type 1 mobile IC is KRW 21,000, Type 2 normal KRW 10,000, and Type 2 mobile IC KRW 15,000. Physical exam is KRW 7,000 for Type 1 large or special, and physical exam KRW 6,000 for Type 1 regular or Type 2 age 70 or older when not waived by a qualifying health-checkup record.

If the driver misses the period, Type 1 and age 70+ Type 2 penalty is KRW 30,000, while Type 2 renewal penalty is KRW 20,000. For aptitude-test targets, missing the deadline by more than 1 year can lead to license cancellation, so the calculator shows the revocation-risk date.

  • A recent national health checkup can replace the KRW 6,000 physical exam for eligible Type 1 regular and Type 2 age 70+ cases.
  • The mobile IC card adds KRW 5,000 relative to the standard plastic license.
  • Type 2 simple renewal has a penalty risk but not the same aptitude-test cancellation path.
