What is the GPA calculator?

The GPA calculator lets university students enter credits and grades by semester, then calculate cumulative GPA, major GPA, year-by-year GPA, earned credits, and the gap to a target graduation or scholarship threshold.

It supports both the Korean-style 4.5 scale and the 4.0 scale commonly used in foreign or special programs, and it handles Pass/Fail courses separately so they do not distort grade points.

GPA scales and formula

4.5 and 4.0 scales

  • 4.5 scale: A+ 4.5, A0 4.0, B+ 3.5, B0 3.0, C+ 2.5, C0 2.0, D+ 1.5, D0 1.0, F 0.
  • 4.0 scale: A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.
  • Formula: GPA = sum(course credits x grade points) / sum(course credits).
  • A 3-credit A+ and a 2-credit B+ on a 4.5 scale gives (3 x 4.5 + 2 x 3.5) / 5 = 4.10.

Overall, major, and year GPA

  • Overall GPA includes general education, major, and electives.
  • Major GPA includes required and elective major courses only.
  • Year GPA groups courses by school year, which is useful when early grades differ from later major-focused grades.
  • P/F courses usually count toward credits but are excluded from grade-point calculation when passed.

Worked examples from the Korean guide

First-year first semester

  • Courses: calculus 3 credits A+, general physics 3 credits B+, English conversation 2 credits A0, computer programming 3 credits A0, writing 2 credits B+, physical education 1 credit P.
  • Earned credits used for GPA: 14 credits, excluding the P/F course.
  • Overall GPA: (3 x 4.5 + 3 x 3.5 + 2 x 4.0 + 3 x 4.0 + 2 x 3.5) / 14 = 55.5 / 14 = 3.96.
  • Major GPA: (3 x 4.5 + 3 x 3.5 + 3 x 4.0) / 9 = 4.00.

Target GPA planning

  • If a student has 102 credits at 3.45 and needs 130 credits at 3.70, current grade points are 102 x 3.45 = 351.9.
  • Target grade points are 130 x 3.70 = 481, so the remaining 28 credits must add 129.1 points.
  • Required remaining GPA is 129.1 / 28 = 4.61, impossible on a 4.5 scale, so the target must be adjusted or older grades retaken where school rules allow.

GPA management tips

  • Build a strong first- and second-year base because early low grades are hard to dilute later.
  • Check whether your school replaces old grades or averages retaken courses; policies differ.
  • Use P/F carefully for difficult non-major general education courses, but confirm whether major courses can be taken P/F.
  • For employment, 3.0 is often a minimum screen, 3.5 or higher is stronger, and graduate-school applications often expect major GPA around 3.7 or higher.
  • Graduation usually requires at least a 2.0 GPA, but scholarships, honors, and selective programs require higher thresholds.
