What the lifetime-cost model includes

The model separates four cost groups instead of hiding unlike items inside one headline quote. This makes it easier to see whether the result is driven by first installation, repeated work, damage exposure, or a resale assumption.

Application and reapplication

The quote per application is multiplied by the number of applications that begin during the ownership period. If ownership ends exactly when a cycle ends, the calculator does not add work on the disposal date.

Removal and preparation

A wrap replacement can add old-film removal. A later repaint can add stripping, sanding, or other separately quoted preparation. Optional final wrap removal is added once when sale or return requires it.

Maintenance and damage response

Annual care stays separate from repair per exterior-damage incident. The incident input is an expected annual count, so a value such as 0.3 means three events over ten years in the arithmetic model.

Downtime and resale change

Repair days are multiplied by a daily transport or time cost. A documented resale increase is positive and lowers lifetime cost; a documented resale decrease is negative and raises it.

How to prepare each input

Vehicle value and ownership period

Vehicle value is used only to show each lifetime cost as a percentage. Use the period from now until the planned sale or return, not an abstract maximum vehicle life. Entering zero vehicle value leaves the ratio blank.

Quote and planned service cycle

A wrap quote should identify film, vehicle class, trim removal, roof, bumpers, mirrors, and jamb coverage. A repaint quote should identify body repair, stripping or sanding, paint system, clear coat, drying, corrosion treatment, and disassembly. Use a conservative replacement plan based on the product documents and actual exposure, not a marketing maximum.

Exterior-damage incidents and downtime

Convert parking scrapes, chips, and other budget-relevant events into an annual expected count. Keep partial wrap repair and spot-paint repair as separate quotes, then enter the days that each method is unavailable.

Resale-value change

The calculator makes no automatic claim that preserved original paint or a repaint earns a premium. Leave both values at zero unless a buyer, lessor, or fleet contract gives you a defensible comparison.

Formula and exact-cycle treatment

Application count is the ownership period divided by the planned cycle and rounded up. A tiny epsilon prevents an extra application on the final day. For example, eight years of ownership with a four-year wrap cycle produces two applications, at the start and at year four, rather than a third at disposal.

The break-even frequency asks how many exterior-damage incidents per year are needed for lower incident response cost to offset higher certain cost. In the worked example, wrap and paint become equal at approximately 0.414286 incidents per year. The entered 0.3 is below that point, so repaint remains KRW 400,000 lower.

How to read the sensitivity table

  1. Check whether the gap widens in the 0.5x low-incident case.
  2. Confirm the 1.0x row matches the main result.
  3. Look for a ranking change in the 1.5x high-incident case.
  4. Treat a frequent ranking change as evidence that incident assumptions need better quotes.

South Korea legal and safety boundary for 2026

Official National Law Information Center records were checked on July 28, 2026. Article 34 of the Automobile Management Act connects approval to the structures and devices prescribed by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport rules. Article 55 of the Enforcement Rule, effective June 3, 2026, identifies covered structures and devices and requires compliance with safety standards. Article 80 addresses inspection issues including unsafe body exteriors or attachments, lamps, plate identification, and unapproved tuned structures or devices.

The Automobile Tuning Regulation effective June 29, 2026 did not return “wrap” or “paint” as a standalone approval or pricing item in the official full-text check. That absence is not a blanket exemption. Confirm any work affecting plates, lamps, reflectors, glazing, cameras, radar, parking sensors, or body structure with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the relevant registration or inspection office, and the installer.

Maintenance evidence and model limits

Wrap maintenance

The 3M Maintenance Instruction Bulletin, Revision A, December 2024, recommends careful cleaning for vehicle wrap film and warns about brush washing, excessive pressure, abrasion, and contaminants. Product, finish, orientation, climate, and maintenance differ, so the calculator accepts an annual care input instead of assigning one universal life.

Paint preparation

A repaint depends on existing coating condition, body repair, corrosion, sanding, color matching, drying, and disassembly. The calculator cannot assess film or coating quality, so scope and warranty need to remain in the written contract.

Is wrapping always cheaper than repainting?

No. A lower first wrap quote can be overtaken by a shorter cycle, removal, annual care, panel repair, and final removal. Matching scope and ownership period is more useful than comparing two first prices.

What wrap replacement cycle should I enter?

There is no universal cycle. Review the exact film document, installer warranty, horizontal exposure, indoor or outdoor parking, cleaning, climate, and your own point for accepting visible aging.

Can I assume one repaint lasts through ownership?

You can enter a cycle longer than ownership when that is your plan. The result still cannot predict corrosion, accident repair, fading, coating quality, or future spot repair, so update the incident cost when needed.
