Korea Car Insurance Mid-Term Cancellation Refund Calculator

Estimate a Korean car-insurance mid-term cancellation refund using exact policy dates, the accepted cancellation reason, pro-rata or short-rate treatment, and confirmed claim-related premium restrictions.

Premium and policy period

Copy the applied premium and effective dates from the policy.

KRW

Use the premium applied to the whole period, not merely the latest instalment or card payment.

Reason and calculation method

The standard wording separates policyholder-responsible cases.

A policyholder-requested exit outside a permitted compulsory-insurance case.

A short-period rate applies. Enter the insurer-confirmed rate whenever it is available because the public table is only a named reference, not a universal statutory tariff.

Claim-related refund restriction

Include only premium the insurer confirms is non-refundable.

A reported accident does not automatically make every coverage premium non-refundable. Ask the insurer to identify the affected coverage and amount before using this field.

What this Korea car-insurance refund calculator actually estimates

Cancelling a Korean motor policy before its scheduled end does not always mean multiplying the annual premium by the months left. The Financial Supervisory Service standard motor-policy wording first separates a reason for which the policyholder is responsible from a qualifying reason for which the policyholder is not responsible. That classification determines whether the insurer uses a remaining-day pro-rata calculation or a short-period rate applied to elapsed time.

A documented vehicle sale, deregistration, duplicate compulsory cover, or another accepted no-fault case generally points to pro-rata treatment. An ordinary voluntary cancellation, an insurer cancellation under the policy wording, or lapse for unpaid premium generally points to the short-rate method. The same premium and date can therefore produce materially different refunds.

The calculator makes that difference visible. It counts policy days using calendar dates, selects either method, lets you replace the named public reference schedule with the rate confirmed by your insurer, and separates any claim-affected premium the insurer says is non-refundable. It is a planning and reconciliation tool, not an insurer quotation, legal determination, or substitute for the final cancellation statement.

The two refund paths under the 2026 standard wording

No policyholder-responsible cause

Article 54 of the standard motor-policy wording calculates the premium for the period after cancellation on a daily basis when the reason is not attributable to the policyholder. The insurer still needs to accept the reason and supporting evidence. A label selected in this calculator does not itself establish eligibility.

Policyholder-responsible cause

The elapsed period is priced with the short-period rate in the motor-insurance rate manual. Typical cases include voluntary cancellation outside a permitted compulsory-cover case, an insurer cancellation under the relevant articles, and termination or lapse after unpaid premium.

Classification controls more than the wording on a menu

A broken vehicle is not automatically a qualifying unusable vehicle, and a planned switch to a cheaper insurer is not automatically duplicate compulsory cover. The evidence, effective times, and insurer decision control. Use the no-fault options only after checking what document the insurer requires and whether it will apply pro-rata treatment.

Why the short-rate table is a reference, not a statutory tariff

The standard wording refers to the short-period rate in the applicable motor-insurance rate manual; it does not establish one universal rate table for every insurer and contract. The default below reproduces a Hyundai Marine & Fire direct-insurance table publicly available when checked on July 24, 2026. It treats the premium applicable to one year as 100% and assigns a retained-premium percentage to each elapsed day band.

One year100%KRW 1,200,000

The calculation selects the first ceiling containing the elapsed day. Day 180 therefore uses 60%, while day 181 moves to 70%. A policy with more than 330 elapsed days uses 100% in this reference model. If your policy is not a 365- or 366-day contract, or your insurer gives you a different percentage, choose the insurer-confirmed input instead.

Formulas used by the calculator

Policy-day count

Total days = policy end date − policy start date

Elapsed days = cancellation date − policy start date

Remaining days = total days − elapsed days

Dates are parsed at UTC midnight so time zones and daylight-saving transitions cannot create fractional days. The cancellation date is clamped to the policy period for a stable estimate, and the interface warns when it had to move an invalid or out-of-period date.

Pro-rata path

Refund = eligible premium × remaining days ÷ total days

Eligible premium means the full applied premium minus only the claim-affected amount the insurer has confirmed as non-refundable. The calculator rounds the resulting KRW amount to the nearest won and derives retained premium as premium minus refund, preserving a complete reconciliation.

Short-rate path

Elapsed premium = eligible premium × short rate

Refund = eligible premium × (1 − short rate)

Short-rate reduction = pro-rata refund − short-rate refund

The comparison amount isolates how much less the selected short-rate method returns than a simple remaining-day method. It does not call the difference a penalty or decide whether the insurer's rate is legally correct.

Worked example: cancellation after 181 days

Assume an applied premium of KRW 1,200,000, a policy from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027, and cancellation on July 1, 2026. The period has 365 days, 181 have elapsed, and 184 remain. There is no claim-related exclusion.

Voluntary cancellation181-day reference short rate of 70%KRW 360,000
DifferencePro-rata refund minus short-rate refundKRW 244,932

This example demonstrates why the cancellation reason matters. It does not promise that a sale will always settle on July 1 or that your insurer uses the displayed 70% reference rate. Evidence acceptance, effective time, insurer-specific rates, and coverage-level adjustments still control the real payment.

How claims affect refundable premium

Article 54 addresses a loss occurring before cancellation for which the insurer must provide compensation. A motor policy, however, contains multiple coverages, and the treatment of premium for a claimed coverage can differ from premium for coverage that was not used. The General Insurance Association of Korea standard motor-insurance product guide illustrates this coverage-level distinction in total-loss situations.

The calculator therefore avoids a broad accident occurred switch that would force every premium to zero. Choose no exclusion when the insurer has not identified a non-refundable amount, partial only after receiving a coverage-level figure, or all only when the insurer confirms the entire applied premium is excluded. The partial amount is capped at the full premium so an entry error cannot create a negative eligible balance.

Questions for the insurer after a claim

  • Which exact coverage generated the paid or payable claim
  • How much premium allocated to that coverage is non-refundable
  • Whether unused coverages and endorsements remain refundable
  • Whether closing a report without payment changes the settlement
  • Whether mileage or another retrospective discount pays separately

Compulsory cover cannot simply be left vacant

Article 5 of the Korean Guarantee of Automobile Accident Compensation Act requires a vehicle owner to maintain the prescribed liability cover. Article 52 of the standard motor-policy wording limits cancellation of compulsory insurance to listed circumstances. A policyholder may need proof of transfer, deregistration, authorised scrappage, duplicate compulsory insurance, qualifying inability to operate after disaster, accident, fire or theft, insurer bankruptcy, or an approved statutory exemption.

Vehicle sale or transfer

Confirm the ownership-transfer document and the accepted effective date.

Deregistration or scrappage

Prepare deregistration proof or an authorised recycler acceptance certificate.

Duplicate compulsory insurance

Show the other valid policy and coordinate both effective times.

Theft or qualifying inability to operate

Provide the incident document required by the insurer and policy wording.

Approved statutory exemption

Keep the formal approval and plate-surrender evidence required by law.

Switching insurers

Start replacement cover before ending the old policy and avoid even a short gap.

Article 5-2 provides a separate exemption route in approved cases such as qualifying overseas stay, subject to legal conditions and approval. Selecting an exemption in this calculator does not obtain that approval. Confirm the legal status, plate procedure, and exact policy treatment before cancellation.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Find the applied premium for the whole policy period on the policy schedule. Do not substitute one monthly instalment or the amount currently visible on a credit-card statement.
  2. Enter the policy start, policy end, and planned cancellation dates exactly. Check effective times separately when a replacement policy starts on the same calendar date.
  3. Select the real cancellation reason and verify what evidence the insurer requires. Ask whether it classifies the case as pro rata or short rate if the answer is unclear.
  4. For a short-rate case, begin with the named public reference only for planning. Replace it with the contract-specific rate supplied by the insurer whenever possible.
  5. After a claim, request the exact non-refundable premium by coverage. Enter none, part, or all according to that confirmation rather than guessing from the repair or settlement amount.
  6. Compare estimated refund, retained premium, pro-rata benchmark, and short-rate reduction. Check that the refund plus retained premium reconciles to the applied premium.
  7. Before submitting cancellation, verify compulsory-cover continuity, documents, endorsement adjustments, mileage settlement, final payment method, and expected deposit date.

Practical scenarios

Selling a used vehicle

Match the accepted ownership-transfer date to the cancellation date, choose vehicle transfer, and plan with the pro-rata result. Ask whether transferring insurance history or replacing the vehicle on the existing contract is financially different from taking a cash refund.

Scrapping and deregistering

Keep the authorised recycler certificate and deregistration proof, then use the date the insurer accepts. Vehicle-tax refunds and insurance-premium refunds are separate procedures with different administrators and payment dates.

Moving to another insurer mid-term

Activate replacement compulsory cover first and ask whether the old policy qualifies as duplicate cover. If the exit is treated as voluntary cancellation, compare the short-rate refund reduction with savings under the proposed new contract.

Total loss after a claim

Request a settlement showing the claimed coverage, unaffected coverages, deregistration timing, and any mileage refund. Use only the insurer-confirmed non-refundable premium, even when the vehicle itself has been declared a total loss.

Items deliberately excluded from the estimate

The refund displayed here can differ from the bank deposit because several contract-specific items sit outside the core Article 54 calculation. Reconcile each of the following rather than forcing it into premium or non-refundable claim premium.

  • Mileage endorsement photos, deadlines, and retrospective refund
  • Mid-term adjustment of child, black-box, safe-driving, or transit discounts
  • Paid and unpaid instalments under monthly or split-payment plans
  • Credit-card reversals, account transfers, interest, or fees
  • Coverage-level claim status and a later withdrawal of a report
  • Insurer rounding rules and time-of-day treatment
  • Rescission, invalidity, withdrawal, or insurer delay-interest rules that are not ordinary mid-term cancellation

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel Korean motor insurance at any time

Voluntary coverage can generally be terminated by the policyholder, but compulsory coverage has restricted cancellation grounds. Transfer, deregistration, duplicate cover, qualifying inability to operate, or another listed case needs the evidence required by the policy and law.

Can I estimate the refund from months remaining

Use calendar days instead. Pro-rata treatment depends on actual total and remaining days, while the reference short-rate schedule changes at boundaries such as 7, 15, 180, and 181 days.

Do all Korean insurers use the same short rate

No. The standard wording points to the applicable rate manual, not one statutory percentage table. The calculator names the insurer that published its reference and gives an insurer-confirmed custom input for this reason.

Does reporting an accident eliminate the whole refund

Not automatically. The payable claim, affected coverage, and contract settlement matter. Obtain the non-refundable premium by coverage and enter that confirmed amount instead of assuming every coverage premium is lost.

Is a mileage refund included

No. Mileage proof, submission deadlines, rates, and payment treatment differ by insurer and endorsement. Ask for that amount as a separate line on the cancellation statement.

Why does the insurer quote a different amount

The insurer may use a different short rate, exact effective time, coverage allocation, instalment balance, endorsement settlement, or won-rounding rule. Request an itemised statement and compare it line by line with the calculator inputs.

Reconcile the estimate before submitting cancellation

Enter the applied premium, exact dates, accepted reason, confirmed short rate, and any coverage-level non-refundable premium. Then compare the result with the insurer's itemised statement, protect compulsory-cover continuity, and confirm documents, endorsement refunds, payment method, and deposit date.
