Korean auto-insurance accident surcharge

This English guide follows the Korean calculator logic and preserves the Korean rates, thresholds, statutory periods, and insurance assumptions used by the source page.

Accident points and thresholds

The Korean surcharge model scores accident points before projecting renewal premium. Property accidents use a surcharge threshold of KRW 500,000, KRW 1 million, KRW 1.5 million, or KRW 2 million. In the UI those are shown as 50, 100, 150, and 200 in KRW 10,000 units.

A property accident above the selected threshold counts as 1 point; a nonzero property accident below the threshold counts as 0.5 point. Injury and own-injury accidents use separate point rules from the Korean source data.

  • The grade range is 1 to 29, where lower grades are more expensive.
  • The accident-count multiplier uses the prior 3-year accident count plus the new accident.
  • The model projects the surcharge effect for 3 years.

Insurance claim versus self-pay

The calculator compares the property loss with the projected three-year extra premium. If the loss is smaller than the extra premium and there is no injury claim, self-pay can be economically better under the model.

This is only an arithmetic comparison. Injury accidents, legal reporting duties, policy terms, and insurer claim-handling rules can make self-pay impractical even when the numerical break-even looks favorable.
