This calculator was prepared for vehicle air-conditioning repairs in South Korea and its sources were checked on 2026-07-26 (July 26, 2026). Weak cooling does not prove that a refrigerant top-up is the correct repair. A leak, a damaged condenser, an expansion-valve problem, compressor control, or weak cabin airflow can create similar symptoms.

Use the result to organize a preliminary budget and compare a written shop quote. Pressure, leak, electrical, and temperature diagnosis; the vehicle refrigerant label; part numbers; and the repairer estimate take priority over every number on this page.

Narrow the cause before choosing a repair line

The cost difference between cleaning an evaporator surface and replacing an evaporator behind the dashboard is large. The same is true for a refrigerant recharge and a compressor replacement. A symptom is useful evidence, but it is not a part-level diagnosis. Record when the problem occurs, then let a trained technician test the system before authorizing work.

Weak or absent cooling

Check recovered refrigerant quantity, operating pressure, leak evidence, compressor operation, condenser airflow, and heat exchange together. If cooling improves briefly after a recharge and then fades, leak diagnosis matters more than repeating an unexplained top-up.

Musty odor

A cabin filter, blocked drain, or contaminated evaporator surface can cause odor. Cleaning and sanitizing is different from an evaporator leak that may require substantial dashboard removal, so compare the diagnosis and labor scope rather than the symptom label alone.

Weak or interrupted airflow

Inspect the filter, blower motor, resistor or controller, wiring, air passage, and evaporator icing. The refrigerant circuit may be working even when a cabin-airflow fault makes the system feel as though it is not cooling.

Squeal, click, or cycling noise

A belt, clutch, bearing, blower obstruction, or internal compressor fault can sound different under load. Note whether the sound begins when A/C is switched on and where it is loudest. Do not approve a complete compressor replacement from sound alone.

Do not add every row together

A compressor or condenser quote may already include refrigerant recovery, vacuum, charging, oil, or line cleaning. Select one primary repair in the calculator and add only separately confirmed costs. When a written quote is available, switch to quote mode so the public range remains a comparison reference rather than a duplicate direct cost.

How the calculation works

1. Direct repair cost

Reference mode uses the low and high values for the selected repair and vehicle origin. Written-quote mode uses the same entered amount for both ends of the range. The quote is still compared with the published reference midpoint when possible.

2. Confirmed extras

The calculator adds a separately confirmed repair charge and downtime days multiplied by daily alternative-transport cost. Do not enter towing, rental, or another repair that is already included in the main written quote.

3. Confirmed support

Warranty, insurance, dealer, or seller support is subtracted only when you enter a confirmed amount. The deduction is capped at the gross cost, so excess support never appears as profit. Approval probability is not converted into money.

4. Contingency budget

A user-selected contingency rate is applied to the remaining out-of-pocket range and rounded to the nearest KRW 1,000. This is a cash-planning buffer, not permission for a shop to perform extra work without agreement.

Step-by-step use

  1. Choose the closest symptom. Candidate repair lines shown by the tool are discussion prompts, not a diagnosis.
  2. Select Korean-brand or imported vehicle and combustion, hybrid, or electric powertrain. Hybrid and electric selections trigger a scope warning because the public ranges do not separately represent every high-voltage electric compressor or thermal-management system.
  3. Select the repair written on the estimate. If the refrigerant is unknown, check the under-hood label before selecting R-134a or R-1234yf.
  4. Start with the public range only before you have a quote. After diagnosis, switch to written-quote mode and enter the amount after checking whether parts, labor, refrigerant, oil, and VAT are included.
  5. Enter only confirmed extras, downtime transport, and approved support. Keep uncertain future costs out of the base case and test them separately if needed.
  6. Review the planning budget, the quote-to-reference signal, the out-of-pocket range, and the ratio to vehicle value. Use the ratio as context, never as an automatic repair-or-replace decision.

Three worked examples

Example 1. R-134a top-up

A Korean-brand vehicle uses the published R-134a top-up range of KRW 50,000–80,000. With no extras or support and a 10% contingency, the planning budget becomes KRW 55,000–88,000. This does not mean that a top-up is the correct repair; a leak check still comes first when refrigerant loss is suspected.

Example 2. Imported compressor

The published imported-compressor range is KRW 800,000–1,800,000. Add KRW 100,000 of confirmed work and two downtime days at KRW 20,000 per day, producing gross cost of KRW 940,000–1,940,000. After KRW 200,000 confirmed support, out of pocket is KRW 740,000–1,740,000. A 10% contingency produces a final budget of KRW 814,000–1,914,000.

Example 3. KRW 700,000 quote

Enter a KRW 700,000 written quote, KRW 50,000 confirmed extra, two days at KRW 20,000, and KRW 100,000 confirmed support. Gross cost is KRW 790,000 and out of pocket is KRW 690,000. At 15%, rounded contingency is KRW 104,000, so the planning budget is KRW 794,000.

What to check on a Korean estimate and repair statement

The current Motor Vehicle Management Act, MST 286989, took effect on 2026-06-16. Article 58(5) addresses repair-business duties such as explaining choices among new, used, or rebuilt parts, publishing standard repair time and labor rates, and issuing estimates and repair statements. The Enforcement Rule, MST 286695, took effect on 2026-06-03; Articles 132 and 134 provide relevant exceptions and procedure details. This summary does not replace the Korean text of the current law.

The 90-, 60-, and 30-day periods are not automatic cash support

Article 134(1) of the Enforcement Rule sets after-service periods for a failure caused by faulty repair: 90 days for a vehicle under one year old or within 20,000 km, 60 days for a vehicle under three years old or within 60,000 km, and 30 days for a vehicle at least three years old or at least 60,000 km. Application requires the cause and vehicle conditions to be established. The calculator does not invent warranty eligibility or a support amount.

Article 134 also addresses estimates, repair statements, record retention, and work beyond the request or agreement. Free repairs and some light maintenance under Article 132 can be treated differently, so do not assume that every visit follows an identical document procedure.

Refrigerant and electric-compressor safety boundary

The Hyundai 2026 owner manual source used here explains that too little or too much refrigerant can reduce cooling performance and harm the system. The actual refrigerant type and quantity must be checked on the under-hood label, and the specified refrigerant and oil require suitable recovery and charging equipment and trained service. R-1234yf has high-pressure and flammability hazards.

  • Do not substitute or mix R-134a and R-1234yf.
  • Do not infer refrigerant from model year alone; read the vehicle label.
  • Check leakage and recovered quantity before charging the specified mass.
  • For a hybrid or electric vehicle, confirm high-voltage isolation, dedicated compressor oil, and battery thermal-management procedures.
  • Do not vent refrigerant or improvise a self-charge procedure. Use a trained technician and appropriate equipment.

Practical planning scenarios

Before the summer rush

Compare leak-diagnostic and refrigerant-service scopes first, and ask whether the inspection fee is included in later work. If shop waiting time may interrupt commuting, enter realistic alternative transport separately from the repair quote.

Comparing high-cost part quotes

Compressor, condenser, and evaporator costs vary with part number, access, and related contamination. Align part condition, labor, refrigerant, flushing, VAT, and warranty scope before comparing two totals.

Separating warranty from self-pay

Keep support at zero while approval is uncertain. After the payer identifies covered parts and labor and confirms the amount, enter that value and recalculate. This prevents an expected benefit from being treated as money already available.

Pre-purchase used-car budget

During a test drive, check cooling, airflow, odor, noise, and left-right temperature. If a symptom appears, obtain professional diagnosis and a quote before purchase. The result is a reserve estimate, not proof of a defect or a guaranteed negotiation value.

Useful comparison habits and limits

Record conditions, not only the symptom

Note outside temperature, idling versus driving, fan level, left-right difference, and when the noise begins. A short video can help reproduce an intermittent fault, but it does not replace pressure, leak, or electrical testing.

Compare included lines before totals

One total may include refrigerant and VAT while another lists only the part and labor. Match part number, condition, labor time, flushing, oil, diagnostic fee, refrigerant, tax, and warranty before deciding which written quote is lower.

Vehicle-value ratio is context only

The displayed ratio helps place cash cost beside an entered vehicle value. It does not measure safety, overall condition, remaining ownership, replacement-car cost, or reliability. Do not use one percentage as an automatic repair-or-replace rule.

Frequently asked questions

Does refrigerant have a mandatory replacement interval?

This calculator does not create a periodic recharge rule. If cooling declines, diagnose refrigerant quantity and the cause of loss, then service the system with the type and mass shown on the vehicle label.

Can R-1234yf be installed in an R-134a vehicle?

Do not treat the refrigerants as interchangeable or mix them. Confirm the specified refrigerant and oil in the vehicle label and manufacturer information, then use a repairer with the correct equipment.

Is a quote above the public range automatically excessive?

No. Imported parts, dashboard removal, line flushing, refrigerant, tax, and related faults can move a quote outside the range. Compare the included lines across written estimates before drawing a conclusion.

Does the tool discount a rebuilt compressor automatically?

No. Rebuilt-part condition, price, and warranty vary too much for a fixed discount. Enter the actual rebuilt-part written quote in quote mode and compare its terms with a new-part quote.

Do hybrid and electric vehicles use the same ranges?

The public ranges do not separately represent every high-voltage electric compressor or battery thermal-management repair. The tool shows a scope warning, and a model-specific specialist estimate must take priority.

What amount belongs in confirmed support?

Enter only an approved or otherwise confirmed warranty, insurance, dealer, or seller contribution. Do not enter a possibility or expected payment. The deduction cannot exceed the gross cost.

Begin with a range and finish with a written quote

Use the public range to prepare before inspection. After diagnosis, recalculate with a written amount that separates parts, labor, refrigerant, oil, tax, and any confirmed extra work. Retain the estimate, agreement record, repair statement, and after-service information with the vehicle records.
