What should you check before booking pet air travel?
The ticket price is only one part of planning a flight with a pet.
A light dog or cat may still exceed the weight limit once its carrier is included, and a carrier can fail because of its base dimensions or height.
This calculator compares your measurements with the published requirements for flights operated by Korean Air and separates outbound and return charges to build a trip preparation budget.
Unlike a monthly pet-care budget, it focuses on acceptance conditions and transport charges for a particular trip.
It is useful when choosing a carrier before buying a ticket, organizing a family trip within Korea or planning an international stay with a return flight.
It does not determine medical fitness or entry eligibility.
The checklist is designed to support a conversation with the airline about a pet reservation.
Scope
The model covers one pet in one carrier and one direct flight in each direction, using the same pet and carrier throughout.
Shared carriers with two pets, connecting itineraries, separately booked air cargo and service-animal exceptions are outside its scope.
Approval remains a separate step
Airlines do not share one universal policy.
A flight marketed under a Korean Air flight number may be operated by another carrier.
Select the outside-scope option for such a codeshare; the calculator will not apply Korean Air acceptance checks or fees to it.
Cabin and checked-pet measurement limits
These Korean Air limits were checked on 2026-09-09.
Measure the outside of the carrier.
Enter the shorter base side as width and the longer base side as length in the orientation used under the seat.
Never substitute a base dimension for height.
A small three-side sum alone does not establish cabin suitability: cabin checks use individual side limits, while checked transport uses both a dimension sum and a height limit.

A soft carrier has two height checks
A soft carrier must meet both the original-height limit of 25cm and the compressed-height limit of 19cm.
Fabric construction does not remove the height requirement.
With the pet inside, the carrier must retain its base and wall structure and provide adequate room; forcing it smaller is not a valid suitability check.
Checked carriers and usable space
Checked transport requires a rigid carrier with wheels removed.
Room for the pet to stand, lie down and move, ventilation, waterproofing, locks and secure construction must be checked separately.
Passing the dimensions does not override a failure of these physical requirements.
Species, age and non-numeric acceptance conditions
Select a dog, cat or pet bird.
Other animals are outside this passenger pet service.
Enter age in whole weeks at the younger of the two flight dates; the calculator does not automatically increase age between flights.
If the birth date is uncertain, verify the available records so the age can be supported at check-in.
Prohibited conditions and snub-nosed breeds are separate
The prohibited-condition question covers airline-restricted breeds, aggression, tranquilizers or sleeping medication, pregnancy and the other listed restrictions.
A separate question checks snub-nosed breeds and their crossbreeds for checked transport.
A snub-nosed animal is not automatically approved for the cabin: all remaining cabin and general conditions still apply.
Compare the animal with the official airline lists; no breed-name classifier is used.
Keep unknown conditions marked unknown
Do not change an unknown answer to no merely to see a cleaner result.
Unknown items remain visible as further checks.
If a family member purchases the carrier or brings the animal, share measured dimensions and the inspection results instead of treating photographs as proof of size or construction.
Aircraft, season and international-route checks
Outbound and return flights may use different aircraft or operate in different months even with the same airline.
For checked transport, review aircraft and date separately for each leg.
Korean Air restricts checked pets on B737 and A321 aircraft year-round on international routes and from June through September on domestic routes.
A domestic departure in May does not establish that a June return is also acceptable.
Temperature prompts additional review
Expected ground handling temperatures of at least 29°C or at most -7°C trigger further airline review.
Temperature alone is not converted into an automatic transport ban.
Even after a normal-range confirmation, actual airport conditions, capacity, aircraft substitutions and day-of-operation decisions remain controlling.
International country and airport conditions
For international flights, record whether entry and exit conditions for the countries and airports have been checked for that direction.
Above 32kg, include confirmation that the route accepts that combined weight.
Some destinations restrict accompanied-baggage transport, and being able to depart does not resolve return travel or entry quarantine.
Detailed quarantine schedules and country-specific eligibility are not determined here.
One-way fees and the round-trip budget formula
Combined weight is pet weight plus the carrier as prepared for travel.
Published domestic fees are per carrier, per direction; unused free-baggage allowance does not replace the pet charge.
Read the acceptance checks before interpreting a fee reference.
Paying a higher fee does not remove a size or transport restriction.

The gap between published domestic fee bands
The domestic base fee is 30,000 KRW up to 32kg and 60,000 KRW from 33 through 45kg.
The published band labels do not establish a rounding rule for a weight above 32 but below 33kg, so that gap remains unpriced until an airline quote is entered.
Above 45kg, this accompanied-pet fee model does not calculate a charge.
Convert each international quote separately
Enter the one-way quote for one carrier in its departure-point payment currency.
The rate is KRW per single currency unit: for yen, use KRW per 1 JPY, not per 100 JPY.
KRW quotes use a rate of 1.
Round each converted leg to whole KRW before adding them.
A quote date cannot be later than its flight date, and a missing amount is different from a confirmed zero charge.
Add preparation costs once
Leg fee = round(quoted amount × KRW exchange rate).
Transport subtotal = outbound fee + return fee.
Trip preparation budget = transport subtotal + carrier purchase + documents and other preparation.
A one-way calculation excludes the return leg.
Buying one carrier does not create two purchase charges, and expenses already included in a quote should not be entered twice.

The confirmations and preparation costs in the fictional example are not information approved by an airline.
Four result states
Within entered conditions means the checks modeled here pass; it is not final airline approval.
Further checks needed means carrier readiness, breed conditions, aircraft, international-route acceptance or temperatures remain unresolved.
Restriction found identifies a failing condition or an exceeded limit.
Outside this calculator means the operating carrier or service is not covered.
When the trip total is unconfirmed
A restricted leg or incomplete price prevents the trip total from being displayed.
A remaining one-way fee reference does not mean that flight can carry the pet.
If only unresolved checks remain and every price is available, the calculator shows a conditional budget that assumes those checks are resolved.
It is not a confirmed airline bill.

Two worked examples using the same calculation model
Both examples assume a pet aged 52 weeks in a 32×45×19cm hard carrier, with adequate construction and no prohibited conditions.
Preparation expenses and international quotes and rates are fictional inputs, not market prices or product recommendations.
The Korean and English interfaces return the same KRW results for the same inputs.
Domestic round trip in the cabin
A 5.5kg pet plus a 1.5kg carrier totals 7kg, exactly the cabin weight limit.
Two 30,000 KRW domestic fees give 60,000 KRW in transport charges.
Adding an 80,000 KRW carrier purchase and 20,000 KRW in other preparation once produces 160,000 KRW.
Increasing the pet weight by 0.0001kg fails the weight check and prevents a trip total.
International round trip with different currencies
Suppose the confirmed fictional outbound quote is 150,000 KRW and the return quote is 150 USD at 1,400 KRW per USD.
The return converts to 210,000 KRW, so transport costs 360,000 KRW and the budget with 100,000 KRW of preparation is 460,000 KRW.
Simply doubling the outbound amount gives 300,000 KRW and understates transport by 60,000 KRW under these assumptions.
Practical planning scenarios and preparation tips
Before purchasing, verify outside dimensions, actual weight and whether wheels and handles are included, even if the product is marketed for air travel.
Looking spacious at home and fitting below the seat are separate questions.
Check it in its travel configuration without assuming that it can be expanded or that the animal can be taken out in flight.
A small dog near the weight limit
When changing carriers, check construction and usable space as well as weight.
Weigh the final setup with bedding and any water equipment, then review the remaining weight margin.
Omitting necessary items or compromising comfort merely to reduce the number is not a solution.
Trips spanning seasons or aircraft changes
Confirm the return flight before settling the round-trip plan.
If a leg restricts checked pets, ask the airline about another aircraft or date.
Do not treat a failed cabin check as automatic eligibility for the hold: age, breed and carrier construction requirements differ between the two methods.
Sharing measurements with family
The CSV includes inputs, the source-check date, each leg’s checks, fee basis and unresolved states.
Share it along with the airline approval record rather than sending only a total.
If measurements or flight details change after booking, generate an updated checklist and inform the airline.
Frequently asked questions
Is a pet weighing no more than 7kg enough for cabin travel?
No.
The limit applies to the pet and the carrier as prepared for travel.
Passing the weight limit does not replace the checks on each dimension, usable space and prohibited conditions.
Is a soft carrier of 25cm always acceptable?
Both heights matter.
It must compress to no more than 19cm while maintaining usable space and the required structure.
A compressed height greater than the original height is an input error.
Why is the fee unconfirmed at 32.5kg?
The published labels use up to 32kg and 33–45kg without establishing a decimal-weight rounding rule.
The calculator therefore asks for a confirmed airline quote for that weight instead of assigning a price.
Is a round-trip fee always twice the outbound fee?
It can be twice as much for matching domestic conditions and fees.
International return quotes can use another departure currency, amount or exchange rate and must be entered separately.
Preparation expenses are added once.
Why can a budget appear while some checks remain unknown?
Known prices can support a conditional planning budget while acceptance questions are being resolved.
That budget assumes unresolved checks will be satisfied; it is not approval.
A restricted leg or a missing leg price prevents the total.
Does giving a sleeping medication make checked transport easier?
Korean Air lists pets given tranquilizers or sleeping medication among transport restrictions.
Do not use medication to try to satisfy transport conditions; discuss health and the travel plan with the treating veterinarian and the airline.
Does the tool arrange quarantine or make a pet reservation?
No.
Country-specific quarantine schedules, document review, seat and hold capacity, ticket purchase and pet approval are separate procedures.
Save the checklist and check availability with the airline at least 24 hours before domestic departure or 48 hours before international departure.

Carrier dimensions and fees come from Korean Air policy, not a statutory cage-size or transport-fee schedule.

Airline breed restrictions can be broader than the statutory dangerous-dog categories; the two lists are not treated as identical.
Recheck age, weight, dimensions, prohibited and snub-nosed breeds, aircraft and seasonal conditions, and prices monthly or when the airline announces a change.
Confirm foreign entry and exit, quarantine documents and airport conditions with the relevant authorities and airline before travel.
