N/A means unknown, not applicable or no recovery within the horizon. Costs are paid now and receipts are modeled at month-end from the start month. This uses 52 weeks divided into 12 months; actual daily or four-week payments, future rates, tax, FX and survival are not guaranteed.

Rules checked: 2026-11-06. Do not enter NI numbers, bank details or actual payment references.

The decision behind a missing NI year

After working in the UK and returning to Korea, you may have gaps in your National Insurance record.
This tool compares tax-year bundles that are still within the ordinary deadline, using personal HMRC quotes and DWP confirmation.
It is designed to help avoid buying a year that does not improve your pension or missing a recoverable year.

The scope is Korean residence, the new State Pension and no third-country aggregation or special residence history.
Korean National Pension contribution months and income-based formulas are not inputs to the UK pension formula.
Basic State Pension cases and exceptional histories need individual advice from the responsible office.

Starting values are fictional and confirmations start unchecked.
A positive estimate does not create entitlement or permission to pay.
Check free NI credits and your current record before considering a payment.

What the three comparison cards mean

The selected-bundle card shows upfront cost and full years after filling.
The least-cost card finds the cheapest confirmed bundle that takes a record currently below ten years to at least ten and increases pension.
The budget card maximizes confirmed weekly pension gain within your budget, with lower cost breaking a tie.
Transfer fees count toward the budget.

Expired, already-full and unavailable years are excluded.
Unconfirmed years remain on hold rather than being deleted merely because their standalone gain is zero.
A bundle may cross the minimum qualifying threshold even if its members do not do so alone.
View up to 64 combinations, including no top-up, in the detailed comparison.

Separate your NI record from a future-work forecast

Enter only years already full in the existing qualifying-year count.
Do not include the incomplete years you are buying.
The first NI record date and tax-year ending year must agree with the available history.
Duplicate years, years before first coverage and more full-plus-missing years than the elapsed record can contain are rejected.

Missing weeks come from the HMRC record.
The cost is HMRC’s confirmed total to fill that specific year, not missing weeks multiplied by today’s reference rate.
Leave an unknown cost blank; zero means confirmed free.
A quote needs a confirmation date and must not be dated after the review date.

The current-record weekly pension is based on the record already accumulated.
A forecast that requires future work or more contributions is a separate figure.
The future-work forecast field is reference only and never enters the break-even calculation.
Mixing these figures can attribute gains from future work to a top-up.

Ordinary tax-year payment deadlines

A UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April of the next year.
The ordinary top-up deadline is 5 April six years after the ending year.
The deadline date is included; the following day is expired.
Days remaining are calendar-date differences.

HMRC exceptions, incorrect historic guidance, appeals or personal permissions can change the actual payment position.
This tool does not grant an exception.
Obtain the exact deadline and amount from HMRC if special permission applies.
Unfinished tax years are excluded from the completed-year comparison.

Overseas eligibility and contribution classes

For overseas periods through tax year 2025-26, check the old conditions: three continuous years of UK residence or at least three years of contributions.
Historic overseas Class 2 also requires work in the UK immediately before leaving and work abroad.
Residence alone does not establish entitlement to the lower Class 2 cost.

For overseas periods from 2026-27, voluntary Class 2 is unavailable.
New overseas Class 3 applications require ten continuous years of UK residence or ten years of eligible NI contributions.
Years qualifying for pension entitlement are not necessarily the same as contribution years qualifying for this new payment test.

The new ten-year contribution test excludes NI credits and ordinary overseas voluntary contributions.
Contributions paid or treated as paid in the UK and specified agreement, posted-worker and volunteer-development-worker exceptions require HMRC review.
Personal HMRC confirmation is therefore separate from the numerical screen.
Korean pension coverage is not automatically added to the UK ten years.

Check every transitional condition

A person who applied for voluntary contributions for 2024-25 or 2025-26 by 2026-04-05 may need to check transitional treatment under the old three-year conditions.
Payment of that application must be completed by 2027-04-05 and the application for 2026-27 Class 3 must also be made by 2027-04-05.
A past application alone is insufficient.

Enter completed dates, not future intentions.
Check that the original application concerns the relevant tax years.
Returning to live or work in the UK ends this transitional treatment.
Ask HMRC about personal treatment, including continuing existing Class 3 arrangements.
This screen organizes the general conditions; it is not an administrative decision.

Pension and cash-flow formulas

The simple formula is only for a first NI record from 2016-04-06 with no earlier contracted-out history.
For qualifying years y below 10, standard weekly pension is zero.
Otherwise it is £241.30 × min(y, 35) ÷ 35.
The cap is 35 years.
These are current-rate comparisons, not forecasts of future pension rates.

Pre-2016 records can involve a starting amount, contracted-out adjustments and protected payments.
Confirmed mode uses the current-record weekly amount and DWP’s post-top-up weekly amount for the exact bundle.
It never adds standalone gains to infer a different bundle.
Missing bundle forecasts remain unknown, and protected payments are not forced down to the standard full-rate cap.

Annual increase is weekly difference × 52.
Net monthly increase is annual increase × (1 − effective tax rate ÷ 100) ÷ 12.
Quotes plus aggregate transfer fees are paid now, with constant month-end receipts from the start month through the end month.
The monthly discount rate is (1 + annual discount rate ÷ 100) raised to 1/12, minus 1.
NPV is discounted incremental receipts less upfront cost.

Nominal recovery is the first month cumulative additional receipts meet upfront cost.
Discounted recovery uses discounted receipts.
N/A means no recovery within the comparison horizon or no applicable result.
Zero upfront cost recovers immediately in the review month; positive cost cannot recover when net receipts are zero.

Worked example: eight years to ten

Assume 8 years already full, two available incomplete years quoted at £956.80 each, DWP confirmation that both contribute to the bundle, and no tax or transfer fees.
The total cost is £1,913.60.
Buying just one year produces 9 years and still no standard pension, but buying both reaches 10.

Post-top-up weekly pension is £68.942857…, annual increase £3,585.028571… and monthly pre-tax equivalent £298.75238….
Nominal recovery occurs in receipt month 7.
With receipts beginning 2033-01, that is 2033-07.
The waiting period before receipts is separate from receipt months to recover and is included in discounting.

For a valid standard record already at 10 or more years, one additional uncapped year increases annual pension by £358.502857….
A £956.80 cost takes 33 receipt months to recover with no tax or fees.
Verify record dates, possible qualifying years, the full-rate cap and current-record figures before applying this illustration.
It is not a universal gain for every year.

Step-by-step use

Separate gathering evidence from making a payment.
First obtain the NI record and distinguish full years from incomplete years.
Then check free credits.
If caring or another circumstance can provide free qualifying coverage, review that route before paying voluntarily.

Copy each year’s HMRC payment permission, cost and quote date.
Ask DWP whether the year contributes to the selected bundle, and obtain bundle-specific weekly amounts for earlier records.
Set your budget, transfer fee and receipt horizon, calculate, and resolve each hold reason.
Changing an input requires recalculation before saving or printing.

  1. Check the NI record and free credits.
  2. Obtain HMRC permission, quotes and dates.
  3. Confirm bundle gains with DWP.
  4. Compare cost, threshold and recovery; save a worksheet.

Interpreting different situations

Near the minimum, compare bundles rather than individual increases.
An eight-year record may need two additional years.
A cheap year with zero standalone pension can still contribute to that bundle.
The minimum-budget card is only for a current record below ten and requires a positive pension increase.

Above the minimum, compare confirmed gain and recovery time.
A record near the full-rate cap can gain little or nothing from another year.
A long wait before pension starts can leave nominal gain positive while NPV is low.
The budget card maximizes pension gain, not NPV; these answer different questions.

An approaching deadline means arranging verification promptly.
It does not justify skipping confirmation or sending money early.
If the selected bundle contains a full, expired or unavailable year, correct the selection before comparing again.

Korean residence, tax and FX limits

Korea is not currently on the UK list of countries receiving annual State Pension increases.
Annual uprating during the modeled Korean-resident receipt period is fixed at zero.
Moving to the UK or another country, the actual initial award and any revaluation need separate confirmation.
A current-rate comparison does not guarantee a future award.

The Korea–UK convention concerns contribution liability and does not totalize coverage periods for pension entitlement.
Do not assume Korean coverage can satisfy the UK minimum.
Exemption from double contributions and voluntarily buying an incomplete NI year are different procedures.

The tax rate, exchange rate and transfer fee are user-confirmed amounts or assumptions.
The tool does not determine UK or Korean taxation, treaty relief, residence status or deductions.
KRW conversion simply multiplies by the supplied KRW per GBP; future spreads and fees can differ.
Test shorter and longer receipt horizons because survival and pension duration are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy gaps if I already have 35 years?

Check the pension amount first.
Contracted-out history can mean more years are needed, so a year count alone does not prove full entitlement.
Standard mode adds no pension beyond its 35-year cap.
DWP’s personal amount takes precedence.

Should I discard a year with zero standalone gain?

Below ten years, a bundle can cross the minimum.
Zero standalone gain differs from no contribution to qualifying coverage.
Ask about its role in the bundle; exclude it if DWP says it does not contribute.

Is missing weeks multiplied by £18.40 a quote?

No.
£18.40 is the 2026-27 Class 3 weekly reference rate.
Earlier rates and partial payments affect actual cost; the previous two Class 3 tax years normally use their original rates.
Enter HMRC’s quote.

Can Korean pension years be added?

The Korea–UK convention is contributions-only, so this tool does not combine coverage.
Third-country agreements and special histories require review outside its scope.

How do I enter a pre-2016 record?

Use confirmed mode with a current-record amount and a DWP-confirmed weekly amount for each exact bundle.
Do not infer another bundle or add standalone increases.
Unconfirmed bundles stay on hold.

Can I use the maximum future-work forecast as my current amount?

No.
A maximum forecast requiring future work is different from the current record.
Keep it in the reference field and enter the amount based only on the current record in confirmed mode.

Does negative NPV mean I cannot pay?

NPV is an economic comparison under your discount rate and receipt horizon, not an eligibility decision.
Waiting time, tax, FX and the end month can change the comparison.
Review personal authorization and household affordability separately.

Can I transfer money immediately after calculating?

First check credits, DWP pension contribution, HMRC personal eligibility and each year’s cost.
Wait for HMRC’s letter with the amount and payment reference.
Contact the International Pension Centre if at or within six months of State Pension age; otherwise check the Future Pension Centre guidance.
