What is the currency exchange calculator?

This calculator converts between currencies using the daily exchange-rate structure used in Korea. It is designed for travel cash, overseas shopping, remittance, foreign-currency deposits, and import or export estimates where the exchange-rate type matters.

The Korean source uses Bank of Korea API exchange-rate data updated daily. It separates the trading base rate, cash buying and selling rates, telegraphic-transfer rates, and bank spreads so the result is closer to what a user actually pays.

Exchange-rate types

Trading base rate

  • The trading base rate is the reference rate announced by foreign-exchange banks.
  • The Korean guide describes it as based on the previous close from Seoul Money Brokerage and announced by the Bank of Korea around 09:00.
  • Example: if the USD/KRW trading base rate is KRW 1,300, one US dollar is referenced at KRW 1,300 before spreads and transaction fees.

Cash and telegraphic-transfer rates

  • Cash buy rate means the customer buys foreign cash: base rate plus the bank fee.
  • Cash sell rate means the customer sells foreign cash: base rate minus the bank fee.
  • With a KRW 1,300 base and about 2% cash spread, cash buy is KRW 1,326 and cash sell is KRW 1,274, creating a KRW 52 gap.
  • Telegraphic-transfer rates apply to account transfers, remittances, foreign-currency deposits, and card settlements and are usually cheaper than physical cash.

Practical scenarios

Travel and overseas shopping

  • KRW 2,000,000 exchanged to USD at a KRW 1,300 base gives about USD 1,538 before cash spread.
  • At a KRW 1,326 cash buy rate, the traveler receives about USD 1,508, so the fee difference is about USD 30 or KRW 40,000.
  • For Japanese overseas shopping, JPY quotes may be shown per JPY 100. A JPY 30,000 item at KRW 900 per JPY 100 is about KRW 270,000.

Remittance and cost control

  • A USD 1,000 remittance at KRW 1,310 telegraphic-transfer buy plus a KRW 15,000 remittance fee requires KRW 1,325,000.
  • Compare bank mobile rates, fintech remittance providers, credit-card settlement rates, and cash exchange booths separately.
  • Use exchange-rate alerts, split large exchanges into several dates, and avoid airport cash exchange unless convenience is worth the spread.
