Korea Fuel Discount Card Break-Even Calculator
Compare up to 10 fuel cards using annual fees, recognized previous-month spending, reward methods and limits. Calculate monthly and annual net savings and break-even liters in KRW.
Examples A and B are fictional. Replace them with your actual card terms.
Check recognized previous-month spending separately for each card, then compare fuel rewards with annual fees and additional costs.
Highest monthly net under entered conditions: Example B · percentage
₩14,000/month
Annualized ₩168,000 · Monthly improvement ₩6,000
Each card is an independent alternative. Rewards from multiple cards are not added to the same fuel spending.

Break-even holds previous-month eligibility, price, reward tier and eligible share fixed, rounding volume up to 0.01 L. Monthly rewards are floored to whole KRW; displayed amounts are rounded to whole KRW. With no annual fee or extra cost, 0 L is a no-loss threshold and does not imply a reward. Annual net assumes 12 identical months and excludes welcome offers, introductory waivers, other lifestyle benefits and cancellation refunds.
Does a fuel discount card earn back its annual fee?
This calculator compares monthly fuel rewards after subtracting one twelfth of the annual card fee and any additional monthly cost.
It is designed for Korean card terms, Korean won (KRW) and liters, with the same calculations as the Korean page.
A large advertised reward per liter may produce little saving if previous-month spending is insufficient or a reward limit is reached early.
Drivers approaching renewal, households consolidating cards and retirees driving less can use actual spending records to compare their options.
A fuel-cost calculator estimates fuel expenses from distance and efficiency.
Here, each card is an alternative way to pay for the same fuel use.
The ranking only orders the candidates you enter by monthly net saving; it does not determine card availability, personal suitability or guaranteed rewards.
Three checks before comparing
- Find out whether fuel purchases count toward previous-month spending.
- Distinguish the eligible purchase amount limit from the actual reward limit.
- Subtract fees and unnecessary spending before treating a reward as a saving.
What to enter from your card terms
Monthly fuel and actual price
Use receipts from representative months to enter liters or spending before discounts.
In amount mode, liters equal monthly spending divided by the actual price per liter.
The initial 100 L and KRW 1,800/L are fictional inputs, not a current nationwide average.
Annual fee and additional cost
Enter the annual fee that applies to you.
Additional monthly cost can include unnecessary purchases made to qualify for rewards or benefits lost by moving spending from another card.
Do not subtract your entire normal household budget: enter the extra burden caused by choosing this card.
Recognized previous-month spending
Enter the threshold, recognized non-fuel spending and recognized fuel spending separately for each card.
If fuel purchases are excluded, recognized fuel spending must be zero.
Increasing this month’s fuel use cannot change last month’s recognized spending.
Check authorization, posting or payment-collection periods, cancellations and exclusions in the issuer’s app.
Brand, fuel type and eligible share
The usual station brand must match a brand-specific card.
Selecting all or mixed brands does not automatically qualify for a single-brand offer.
Choose your usual covered brand and use the eligible share to exclude other stations, transactions and daily or per-purchase excess.
Changing fuel type clears every card’s fuel eligibility confirmation so you can check it again.
Record a card name, a terms-check date and notes about spending tiers or excluded transactions.
Compare up to 10 candidates and copy a card to model a different tier.
Uncheck a discontinued or unavailable candidate to exclude it.
No live product catalog is loaded: the initial Example A and Example B are synthetic conditions, not offers from real issuers.
Three reward methods and two separate limits
Reward per actual liter
Multiply actual liters by the reward per liter.
At 100 L and KRW 100/L, the reward before limits is KRW 10,000.
Use this method only when the product terms apply to actual fuel volume.
Issuer reference-price conversion
Multiply eligible spending by the quoted per-liter reward, then divide by the issuer’s reference fuel price.
This differs from using the actual price paid at the pump.
For KRW 180,000 spent, a KRW 100/L reward and a KRW 2,000/L reference price, the reward before limits is KRW 9,000.
Percentage of eligible spending
Multiply eligible spending by the percentage divided by 100.
A KRW 150,000 eligible spending limit at 10% permits at most KRW 15,000 in rewards under that limit.
Entering KRW 150,000 as a reward limit would overstate the benefit.
A monthly reward limit of zero means no reward; an eligible spending limit of zero means no spending limit.
Rewards cannot exceed the eligible purchase amount.
The model floors the combined monthly reward to whole KRW, but does not reproduce issuer-specific rounding for each transaction or each day.
Actual statement rewards may therefore differ slightly, particularly when a reference-price method rounds the percentage before applying it.
Net saving and break-even formulas
Monthly net = monthly fuel reward − annual fee / 12 − extra monthly cost
Annual net = monthly reward × 12 − annual fee − extra monthly cost × 12
Required reward = ceil(annual fee / 12 + extra monthly cost), in KRW
Break-even liters = required reward / (fuel price × eligible share × reward fraction)
For the actual-liter method, the reward fraction is the per-liter reward divided by the actual fuel price.
For reference-price conversion, divide by the issuer reference price instead; for a percentage reward, divide the entered percentage by 100.
The minimum fuel volume is rounded up to 0.01 L.
Previous-month eligibility, the spending tier, price, eligible share and additional monthly cost stay fixed during this calculation.
If previous-month spending is insufficient, the reward is zero.
The calculator does not replace this condition with an amount you should spend on fuel now.
If the maximum monthly reward is below the monthly fee allocation plus additional cost, the limits prevent recovery regardless of fuel volume.
When the annual fee and additional cost are both zero, a 0 L result is a no-loss threshold and does not mean a positive reward has been earned.
Even the first-ranked candidate can have a negative monthly net.
Worked comparison using fictional cards
Assume 100 L each month, an actual price of KRW 1,800/L, recognized previous spending of KRW 400,000 against a KRW 300,000 requirement, a 100% eligible share and no extra cost.
These are synthetic examples that illustrate the method.
| Item | Example A · actual liters | Example B · percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | KRW 24,000 | KRW 12,000 |
| Reward terms | KRW 100/L | 10% |
| Monthly reward limit | KRW 15,000 | KRW 15,000 |
| Monthly eligible spending limit | Unlimited | KRW 150,000 |
| Monthly reward | KRW 10,000 | KRW 15,000 |
| Monthly net | KRW 8,000 | KRW 14,000 |
| Annual net | KRW 96,000 | KRW 168,000 |
| Break-even monthly liters | 20 L | 5.56 L |
With A as the current card, B improves monthly net by KRW 6,000.
However, if qualifying for B causes KRW 20,000 of unnecessary purchases every month, B’s monthly net becomes −KRW 6,000.
Review the spending assumptions behind the ranking before acting on it.
Step-by-step use and saving your comparison
- Use receipts to enter monthly liters or spending before rewards, plus the actual price.
- Copy annual fees, reward methods and both limits from current product terms.
- Check recognized previous-month spending and fuel exclusions in each issuer’s app.
- Confirm the brand, fuel type, eligible share after daily or transaction limits, and additional costs.
- Select your current card as the baseline and compare improvement, break-even volume and spending shortfalls.
- Save inputs and comparison as a text file, then review the terms and their check dates.
The downloaded file includes results and reproducible inputs.
Refreshing the page resets the form, so save a comparison you want to revisit.
The calculator does not submit these inputs to its server or apply for or cancel a card.
Annual figures assume 12 identical months and exclude welcome offers, introductory spending waivers, other lifestyle benefits and cancellation refunds.
Scenarios when your habits change
Retirement or working from home
If monthly fuel use falls from 100 L to 15 L, an annual-fee card may become less useful.
Example A requires 20 L to recover its costs, so fuel rewards alone do not cover its fee below that volume under unchanged conditions.
Do not extrapolate a high-mileage holiday month across the entire year.
Moving to a higher spending tier
A higher reward limit may require extra purchases or giving up another card’s benefits.
Copy the row and change the requirement, recognized spending, limits and additional costs together.
The calculator never fills a shortfall for you or assumes the extra spending has already occurred.
LPG and Korean light cars
Confirm that LPG is eligible and whether conversion uses a gasoline reference price.
You can enter a light-car card’s ordinary fuel reward terms, but keep fuel-tax refunds separate from card rates and reward limits.
Vehicle, household and refund eligibility require a separate check.
EV charging uses a different unit and is outside this liter-based comparison.
Family cards and several stations
If a limit is shared across a principal and family cards, account for the portion already used.
Choose a conservative covered share when using several station brands.
Each candidate represents using one card for the same fuel spending; adding every row’s saving together would count the same purchases repeatedly.
Frequently asked questions
Does a KRW 1 spending shortfall make the reward zero?
Yes, if recognized spending is below the requirement you entered.
New-card introductory benefits and spending waivers are not applied automatically; check the product terms separately.
Is a reward limit below the annual fee always a loss?
Compare the monthly reward limit with one twelfth of the annual fee, plus monthly additional costs.
If even the maximum reward cannot cover that monthly cost, increasing fuel use cannot recover it within this model.
Why must I enter recognized previous fuel spending?
Issuers can exclude all fuel spending, discounted transactions or other categories.
Automatically adding this month’s expected purchases to last month’s spending would misclassify eligibility.
How do I compare a card with no annual fee?
Enter zero when the fee actually payable is zero.
You may also use the no-reward, no-fee baseline, but do not assume a past waiver or cancellation refund automatically repeats in the future.
Are coffee discounts, mobile discounts and fuel-tax refunds included?
Only fuel rewards are included.
Other benefits, tax refunds, welcome cashback and cancellation refunds require a separate review; lost benefits from your existing card can be entered as extra monthly cost.
Will the statement match once I exceed the break-even volume?
This is a monthly aggregate estimate.
Transaction-level truncation, rounded rates, cancellations, changing tiers, excluded purchases and shared family limits can produce a different statement result.
