This English guide follows the Korean calculator logic and preserves the Korean won amounts, statutory thresholds, vehicle categories, penalty rates, subsidy caps, and administrative assumptions used by the source page.

Fare base and pass rules

The calculator starts with regional public-transport fares, not a national average. Seoul uses KRW 1,550 subway fare, KRW 1,500 city bus fare, KRW 3,000 metropolitan bus fare, and KRW 1,200 village bus fare. Distance fare starts after 10 km, adding KRW 100 per 5 km up to 50 km and KRW 100 per 8 km after that.

K-Pass requires at least 15 monthly rides. The source refund rates are 20 percent for general users, 30 percent for youth, 30 percent for seniors, and 53 percent for low-income users. Multi-child adjustments add 30 percent for two children and 50 percent for three or more children where applicable.

  • The Seoul Climate Card uses KRW 62,000 for general users, KRW 55,000 for youth or two-child households, and KRW 45,000 for three-child or low-income cases.
  • The Gyeonggi Pass starts from 15 rides and can fully refund after 61 or more rides under its rule set.
  • The Modu Card standard thresholds are KRW 62,000 metropolitan and KRW 55,000 provincial for general users.
  • The Modu Card Plus thresholds for GTX, Shinbundang Line, and metropolitan bus use are KRW 100,000 metropolitan and KRW 90,000 provincial for general users.

Car comparison

The car comparison uses Korean fuel prices and fixed ownership assumptions. The constants are KRW 1,680 per liter for gasoline, KRW 1,520 for diesel, KRW 1,050 for LPG, and KRW 292 per kWh for EV charging. Default efficiency is 12 km/L for gasoline, 14 km/L for diesel, 9 km/L for LPG, and 6 km/kWh for EV.

Monthly fixed car cost is modeled as KRW 200,000 depreciation, KRW 60,000 insurance, KRW 25,000 vehicle tax, and KRW 30,000 maintenance before parking and tolls. That lets the pass result compare public transport with the full cost of commuting by car.
