Overseas resident tax calculator

This page translates the Korean overseas resident tax guide and keeps the same residency determination, Korean-source income, worldwide income, treaty, foreign tax credit, property, pension, and overseas account filing checks.

Residency determination

The Korean model uses the 183-day residency rule together with domestic address and family-location factors. A person can still be treated as Korean resident when they maintain a domestic address or close living base in Korea.

Resident status generally brings worldwide income into Korean taxation, while nonresident status focuses on Korean-source income. The calculator therefore separates domestic employment, overseas employment, business, interest, dividend, pension, rental, and other income.

Tax and foreign tax credit

For resident calculations, the model applies the Korean progressive income tax brackets from 6 percent to 45 percent, the KRW 1.5 million basic deduction, and local income tax at 10 percent of national income tax.

Foreign tax credit is limited by the Korean tax attributable to foreign-source income. The calculator shows the foreign tax credit limit and actual credit, rather than subtracting all foreign tax without restriction.

Property, pension, and account reporting

Korean real-estate transfer tax treatment can differ between resident and nonresident cases. The simulator includes single-household exemption assumptions, basic capital-gain deduction concepts, and a nonresident comparison screen.

The guide also checks national pension lump-sum refund scenarios and the overseas financial account reporting threshold of KRW 500 million. Use the result before departure, during expatriation planning, or before filing a return after moving abroad.
