Korea Tree Burial Cost Calculator

Compare tree, lawn, flower, columbarium, and grave burial quotes over 30 years with management timing, renewal, transition, relocation, and present value in KRW.

Compare the same people over 30 years

Use facility quotes and contracts. Compare usage-fee ranges, management charges, relocation, and expiry costs in Korean won. No national average prices are assumed.

Enter 1 for an individual, 2 for a couple, or the actual family count. All placements start now. Changing the count clears quote confirmations; recheck family prices. The discount rate is a planning assumption.

Tree burial · Enter and confirm quote

For a fixed quote, enter the same low and high amount. Operator selection does not change prices. Exclude past payments; enter only costs payable from now.

Enter the actual contract term, such as 15 or 30 years. Confirm every renewal needed for this comparison. A transition package must include all remaining placement, management, and moving costs. A transition at year 30 is a budget for use after the horizon.

Initial relocation and extras — always whole-family totals

Compare the initial price and the cost of keeping a burial arrangement

This tree burial cost calculator compares tree, lawn, and flower burial, columbarium placement, and grave burial for the same number of people over 30 years.
It helps families preparing a funeral or approaching the end of an existing placement contract account for management fees, renewals, and relocation alongside the initial usage fee.
An attractive initial price can omit a management prepayment or a substantial renewal bill.
The comparison separates cash required now from later spending so those differences remain visible.

South Korea and KRW only

This guide uses Korean facility contracts and the Korean Funeral Services Act, checked on September 5, 2026.
All amounts are Korean won, with no currency conversion or nationwide market-price assumptions.
The tool does not assess burial rights, permits, eligibility, tax deductions, or a facility contract on your behalf.

A shared tree, an exclusive family tree, and individual placements may use different charging units even when all are advertised as tree burial.
Public, national, and private facilities can also differ in eligibility and contract length.
Selecting an operator therefore does not apply an automatic price multiplier.
Enter the low and high amounts actually quoted, or use the clearly identified fictional example to learn the workflow before replacing its figures.

Decisions this comparison supports

  • Compare a family tree for two parents with separate columbarium placements.
  • Record the remaining term and next renewal payment before a family discussion.
  • Understand how annual management charges and term prepayments change cash timing.
  • Identify omitted moving, cremation, and ancillary costs in an initially inexpensive quote.

What the five alternatives include

Tree, lawn, and flower burial

These natural-burial arrangements place cremated bone powder beneath or around trees, grass, or flowers.
Check the allocated space, marker, maintenance service, shared-use conditions, and charges for additional family members.
Natural burial does not itself guarantee that remains can later be recovered and moved.
Confirm any proposed transition with the facility before entering it as a feasible alternative.

Columbarium and grave burial

Columbarium placement keeps remains in an enshrinement facility, while grave burial requires attention to installation and ongoing management costs.
The quoted price may already include the niche position, grave construction, stonework, or placement work.
Do not count the same item again under extras.
This is an interment comparison rather than a complete funeral-hall, catering, or prepaid funeral-service budget.

Exclude past funeral payments and nonrecoverable charges for an existing arrangement when comparing future choices.
Include newly required cremation or exhumation in the alternatives that actually need them.
For detailed one-time relocation planning, consult the grave relocation and exhumation calculator, then transfer the verified whole-family expenses here.

A 30-year comparison is not a universal 30-year contract

Article 19 concerns grave installation periods

Article 19 of the Korean Funeral Services Act sets a 30-year installation period for graves in public and private cemeteries and provides for one 30-year extension upon application.
A local ordinance may shorten that extension to at least 5 years but less than 30 years.
Application to existing graves and the starting date for joint interment also require verification.
Article 16 addresses the establishment of natural-burial grounds; it does not impose one contract duration on every natural-burial or columbarium arrangement.

The calculator uses 30 years as a common comparison horizon.
For a new 15-year contract, enter 15 years until first expiry.
For an existing 15-year contract with 14 years already used, enter the verified remaining year instead.
The duration of each renewal is a separate input because its terms may differ from the first contract.
Grave burial does not offer the no-expiry option; verify the actual remaining installation period with the relevant authority.

If a provider uses the word perpetual, read the usage rights, management obligations, termination provisions, and closure arrangements separately.
For natural burial and columbarium placement, select no expiry within 30 years only after confirming that the contract needs no renewal during this horizon.
The selection does not establish land ownership, permanent maintenance, or indefinite facility operation.

Match each input to the written quote

People and price basis

Enter 1 for an individual, 2 for a couple, or the actual family count.
All placements are assumed to start now; family members added at different future dates need a separate schedule from the facility.
Usage, management, and expiry amounts multiply by the people count only when the per-person basis is selected.
A whole-family quote is added once.
Entering an entire family-tree price as a per-person price would double it for a couple.
Changing the people count clears quote confirmations so you can recheck family totals and included capacity.

Low and high amounts, and management fees

Enter identical low and high amounts for a fixed quotation.
If a verified choice of location or grade leaves a range, enter its quoted lower and upper amounts.
This is a quote range, not a statistical confidence interval, probability distribution, or national average.
If management is included in the usage fee, select no separate charge.
Otherwise enter either one annual fee or the full management prepayment due for a contract term.
A prepayment is not multiplied again as if it were an annual charge.

Exhumation, cremation, transport, and extras

These fields always hold whole-family initial expenses.
They are not multiplied again when usage fees are priced per person.
Add verified container, marker, placement labor, transport, and other excluded charges to the appropriate field.
Do not charge cremation again if it is already complete, or duplicate transport included in a package.
Use the actual applicable crematorium fee after confirming residency categories and any reduction directly.

Confirming the quote and its inclusions

The initial zero values mean that entry is pending, not that a facility is free.
A quote becomes eligible after you check its amounts and required inclusions and tick the confirmation box.
A genuinely free or fully exempt arrangement can retain zero values and be explicitly confirmed.
Deselect alternatives that you do not intend to compare.
Reversed low and high values or invalid input ranges display a correction message instead of a completed result.

Include the cost of renewal or transition

For renewable arrangements, enter the renewal usage-fee range and the duration of every repeated term.
If management is prepaid, the same management prepayment is charged again at each renewal.
Confirm that every renewal required within the 30-year horizon is available; an initial 15-year contract does not establish future availability.
The model assumes no additional escalation beyond the future amounts you enter.
To examine a possible increase, change the upper quote and compare the result.
The calculator does not forecast future facility prices.

If management for the current contract is already fully prepaid, check that option to exclude it from cash payable now.
Future renewal prepayments still apply.
For partly paid or complex installment contracts, obtain a separate schedule of outstanding payments and future management charges from the facility.

A transition package must cover all usage, management, and moving expenses from the first expiry through the end of the remaining 30-year horizon.
Original annual management charges stop after the expiry year; later management is assumed to be inside that package.
Omitting it from the package would understate total costs.
Some arrangements cannot practically be moved, and entering a transition fee does not verify a right to relocate remains.
If expiry terms are still unknown, leave the action unconfirmed and obtain the facility response before completing the comparison.

The year-30 boundary

Annual management payments occur at the ends of years 1 through 30.
For a 15-year contract, one renewal at year 15 belongs in this horizon; the next contract at year 30 is displayed separately as a cost of continuing afterward.
If only 1 year remains and subsequent terms last 15 years, renewals at years 1 and 16 are both included.
A required prepayment is included in full even when part of the last term extends beyond the horizon.
No assumed refund or residual contract value is deducted.

Nominal total, present value, and ranking

Nominal total = initial usage + initial relocation and extras + management + renewal or transition payments before year 30
Present value PV = Σ Cₜ / (1 + r/100)ᵗ
Nominal annual average = 30-year nominal total / 30
Total per person = 30-year nominal total / people placed

Cₜ is a payment t years from now, and r is the user-selected annual discount rate.
Initial payments are not discounted; future payments use the same rate so their timing is comparable.
At 0%, present value equals the nominal total.
The discount rate is neither a statutory rate nor a guaranteed investment return.
A smaller present value is not an invoice discount: use nominal payments and their dates when deciding how much cash to prepare.

Confirmed complete quotes are sorted by the upper bound of present value.
A clearly lowest-cost alternative is identified only when its upper bound is below every competing lower bound.
Overlapping ranges and ties do not establish a definite cheapest alternative.
One confirmed quote can provide a budget, but at least two are needed for relative comparison.
An in-horizon expiry with unknown follow-up costs excludes the quote from the 30-year ranking rather than treating those missing years as free.

Worked example: maintain a 15-year contract for 30 years

This fictional example uses one person, a KRW 1,000,000 initial usage fee, KRW 100,000 annual management, and a KRW 1,000,000 renewal at year 15 for another 15 years.
Initial relocation costs are zero and the low and high quotes are identical.
These figures explain the calculation and are not an actual facility quote or an average columbarium price.

Payment timing and 30-year costs for the fictional 15-year contract
ItemTimingAmount
Initial usage feeNowKRW 1,000,000
Annual management totalYear-ends 1–30KRW 3,000,000
Renewal usage feeYear 15KRW 1,000,000
30-year nominal totalWithin the horizonKRW 5,000,000
Present value3% discount rateKRW 3,601,906

The nominal annual average is approximately KRW 166,667, while KRW 1,000,000 is payable now.
The next KRW 1,000,000 renewal at year 30 is outside this total.
If management instead costs KRW 1,500,000 prepaid per 15-year term, payments are KRW 2,500,000 now and KRW 2,500,000 at year 15.
The nominal total remains the same, but its present value is greater when the discount rate is positive.
Alternatively, a KRW 2,000,000 all-inclusive transition at year 15 produces a nominal total of KRW 4,500,000: the initial fee, 15 annual management payments totaling KRW 1,500,000, and the transition package.

Reading the official family-tree example

The National Sky Memorial Park schedule checked on September 5, 2026 lists the Grade C family-tree fee as KRW 4,410,000 prepaid for 30 years for 1–3 people.
Beyond the included count, it adds KRW 45,000 per additional person per year, with a maximum of 10 people.
For four people all placed now, the formula is 4,410,000 + 45,000 × 30 = KRW 5,760,000.
For ten people, the same calculation gives KRW 13,860,000.
The base family-tree charge is not reduced proportionally for only one or two people.

This is one national facility and one family-tree grade, not a nationwide tree-burial price table.
When someone is added after time has already elapsed, the actual remaining term may determine the additional fee.
That differs from the button, which assumes all placements start now.
The official guidance describes an initial 30-year term and one further 30-year extension, but does not establish every separate exhumation, cremation, transport, or contractual condition in your case.
The button fills the usage fee and leaves the quote unconfirmed until you check the missing expenses and inclusions.

Use the comparison in a family discussion

  1. Align people and dates.
Record the people to be placed, elapsed contract time, and the verified period remaining from now.
  2. Ask facilities about the same scope.
Confirm residency requirements, the charging unit, included maintenance, additional placements, renewals, and refund terms in writing.
  3. Enter payments now and after expiry.
Do not assume unresolved items are free; leave the quote unconfirmed until the cost scope is understood.
  4. Find the reason for each difference.
Review initial cash, annual averages, the next expiry, and individual payment dates alongside the PV ordering.
  5. Print the table for the family.
Use the browser print dialog to save a PDF and include assumptions and unresolved items with the figures.

When relatives live in different regions, discuss visiting distance, transport, religious preferences, and the maintenance contact as well as the price difference.
For an expiring columbarium contract, first establish a continuous arrangement after expiry.
For a family tree already in use, compare additional future payments and the remaining term rather than entering the original purchase twice.
A cost table does not decide whether the facility is permitted or whether a particular contractual right is valid.

Frequently asked questions

Is tree burial always cheaper than a columbarium?

No universal ranking applies.
Shared space, included family capacity, contract term, and management charges differ.
Compare actual quotes for the same people and period.

Does a 15-year contract require two renewals in the total?

Only the renewal at year 15 enters a new 30-year comparison.
The year-30 renewal is separate.
An existing contract with one year remaining can instead require renewals at years 1 and 16.

How should a perpetual-use offer be entered?

For natural burial or columbarium placement, use no expiry within 30 years only when the contract confirms it.
This does not guarantee management exemption, land ownership, or permanent facility operation.
Grave burial does not offer that selection.

Should I add management when it is already included?

No.
Select included or no separate charge.
Annual payments and prepayments have different timing and therefore different present values when the discount rate is positive.

Can I budget for moving remains later?

Enter a remaining-horizon transition package only after confirming that the move is possible.
Retrieval after natural burial is not automatically assumed.
Unknown in-horizon expiry costs exclude the quote from the 30-year ranking.

Does a zero amount mean the facility is free?

Initial zeros are pending entries.
Confirm the quote and inclusions to make it valid.
A verified exempt arrangement may remain at zero and be explicitly confirmed.

What should I do when price ranges overlap?

The PV upper-bound order is only a sorting aid.
Overlap or ties do not establish a definite cheapest option.
Check missing items and contract conditions to narrow the ranges.

Keep the outstanding questions beside the numbers

Record management inclusions, the next expiry date, renewal availability, and relocation feasibility alongside the price.
Seeing the cash needed today and the costs later family members may face makes the discussion more concrete.
