Why compare travel and family time with a grave-mowing quote?

Family-managed mowing does not produce a contractor invoice, but it is not cost-free. A distant family grave can require fuel, tolls, parking, meals, or an overnight stay. A mower, blades, line, mixed fuel, transport tools, eye protection, gloves, gaiters, and tick or insect supplies also create recurring costs. When two or three relatives travel and work together, every hour is multiplied by the participant count.

A service advertisement can be incomplete in the opposite direction. The final quote may depend on grave count, managed area, slope, the last point reachable by vehicle, the carry distance, vegetation and brush, removal of cuttings, photo reporting, VAT, and rework terms. This calculator therefore does not insert a nationwide Korean market average. It compares actual family records with scope-matched per-visit and annual-contract quotes in KRW.

Prepare evidence before entering costs

Like-for-like scope

Count the actual grave mounds and measure the area that must be cut, including the immediate access strip where appropriate. Area does not generate an automatic price. It identifies the scope and lets you normalise quotes as annual cost per square metre. Use the same annual visit frequency for all three alternatives.

Travel cash

Enter the actual driving round trip, not a one-way map distance. Fuel per visit is round-trip kilometres divided by measured kilometres per litre, multiplied by the fuel price per litre. Add tolls, parking, meals, and lodging only when they arise because of the maintenance visit.

Family person-hours

Enter travel and waiting time plus on-site work time per participant, then enter the number of participants. The calculator multiplies the combined hours by the headcount. Hourly value is not a statutory wage. It may represent foregone pay, leave, replacement care, or a family-agreed opportunity value.

Equipment and safety supplies

Purchase cost is divided by the planned useful life for the annual economic comparison. Upkeep, storage, and PPE are annual costs; blades, line, mixed fuel, bags, and similar consumables are per-visit costs. The full equipment purchase is also shown separately in first-year cash need.

Per-visit quote

Separate the base quote from confirmed slope, remote-access, brush, debris-removal, or other site additions. If before-and-after photographs are included in the base quote, leave the photo fee at zero. Keep the VAT basis consistent across all alternatives.

Annual contract

Confirm how many visits the annual base includes. If your planned frequency exceeds that count, the calculator adds the extra-visit price. Put confirmed annual photo, brush, remote-site, administration, or other non-base charges in the annual extra field without double counting.

How the comparison is calculated

1. Family-managed annual economic cost

Cash per visit combines fuel, tolls and parking, extra meals and lodging, consumables, and other direct cash. Time per visit equals participants multiplied by travel plus work hours and by the hourly value. Annual fixed cost combines annualised equipment, annual upkeep, and annual safety supplies.

Annual family-managed cost = annual fixed cost + visits × (cash per visit + time cost per visit)

2. Per-visit service and annual contract

The per-visit model adds base, site, photo-report, and other costs, then multiplies by annual visits. The annual-contract model adds its base and annual extras, plus the number of visits above the included count multiplied by the extra-visit fee. An all-zero service option is treated as a quote that has not been entered and is excluded from ranking.

3. Five-year present value

The planning model assumes the same economic cost occurs at the end of each of five years. Each amount is divided by one plus the annual discount rate raised to the year number. One user-selected effective annual rate is applied consistently to every option. The calculator does not forecast Korean inflation, fuel, wage, or contractor-price growth.

4. Two break-even measures

Visit-frequency break-even is annual family fixed cost divided by per-visit service cost minus family variable cost per visit. It exists only when the service price per visit is above the family variable cost. Hourly-value break-even takes the lowest available service annual cost, subtracts family-managed annual cost before time, and divides by annual family person-hours. A zero hourly threshold means the service option is already no more expensive before family time receives a price.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Freeze the scope. Record grave count, managed square metres, annual frequency, slope, access, vegetation, removal, and reporting expectations.
  2. Collect the last family visit record. Use actual distance, fuel economy, fuel price, tolls, parking, lodging, participant count, and elapsed time.
  3. Separate cash from economic cost. Enter the equipment purchase and useful life, annual upkeep and PPE, and per-visit consumables.
  4. Send one scope sheet to multiple providers. Use the same address, coordinates, marked photographs, area, completion standard, and requested date.
  5. Compare annual and five-year results. Review first-year cash, person-hours, per-person family shares, and break-even values rather than the base quote alone.
  6. Take the next action. Request two or more written quotes or record a family role and cost-sharing agreement, then preserve the included scope.

Worked example: two graves and two annual visits

This fictional scenario explains the model and is not a Korean market benchmark. It assumes two graves over 100 m², two visits a year, four family cost sharers, and a 3% annual discount rate. Family travel is a 300 km round trip at 12 km/L and KRW 1,700/L. Two participants spend five hours travelling and four hours working per visit, with time valued at KRW 20,000 per person-hour.

Equipment purchase is KRW 600,000 over five years, annual upkeep is KRW 80,000, annual safety supplies are KRW 150,000, and per-visit consumables are KRW 60,000. The per-visit quote is KRW 450,000 plus a KRW 100,000 site surcharge. The annual contract is KRW 950,000 for two included visits plus KRW 50,000 of confirmed annual extras.

Read the result, then verify the contract

The annual contract is KRW 100,000 below the per-visit service and KRW 515,000 below family-managed annual economic cost. Family-managed annual cost before time is KRW 795,000, and annual family labour is 36 person-hours. The hourly value that makes family-managed cost equal the KRW 1,000,000 annual contract is approximately KRW 5,694 per person-hour, well below the entered KRW 20,000. The calculation still says nothing about provider quality, so included visits, site surcharges, reporting, rework, cancellation, and responsibility must be checked.

Practical scenarios

A distant grave visited in one day

Map distance alone understates the burden. Include congestion, rest stops, equipment loading, waiting, and the walk from the last vehicle-access point. Use receipts for tolls and meals. If several relatives attend, person-hours increase with every participant even when the vehicle cash cost does not.

Several graves or a broad surrounding area

Providers may define the area around one grave differently. State both grave count and square metres. Mark the mound perimeter, access strip, stone surroundings, and brush zones on photographs. Annual cost per grave and per square metre helps reveal when two quotes cover different work.

Family cost sharing is disputed

Share both annual economic cost and first-year cash need. The former includes family time and annualised equipment; the latter excludes time but includes the full equipment purchase. The equal per-person output is a discussion aid, not a legal allocation or a stored family agreement.

An annual contract is being considered for the first time

A low annual headline may include only one visit or exclude brush, photographs, and removal. Enter included visits and the extra-visit fee together. Automatic renewal, rain cancellation, schedule changes, rework, and refunds are not calculated and must be read in the written terms.

Safety and Korean legal scope

A lower cost is not a finding that family work is safe

Slopes, wet ground, hidden stones or metal, tall vegetation, brush, cutting debris, heat, ticks, insects, and powered cutting equipment can create serious hazards. The model does not evaluate skill, PPE, weather, emergency access, lone work, or whether the site can be maintained safely. Where risk is uncertain, do not treat the cost result as permission or a recommendation to work.

Recurring mowing is not exhumation or grave relocation

On August 23, 2026, the Korean National Law Information OPEN API returned the current Funeral Services Act as ID 001794, MST 259173, effective January 24, 2025. Article 2 item 4 defines exhumation and relocation as moving buried remains to another grave or enshrinement facility, or proceeding to cremation or natural burial. This calculator covers repeated vegetation cutting and surrounding cleanup only. It excludes remains, cremation, enshrinement, reburial, unclaimed graves, land rights, grave-site rights, and the authority of related persons.

Limitations and sensitivity checks

  • Do not substitute a national average for matched quotes. Scope, access, slope, vegetation, removal, and reporting often explain more than grave count alone
  • Do not remove both equipment and time. Existing equipment can reduce new purchase cash, but upkeep, storage, consumables, remaining life, and family time may remain
  • Test several hourly values. Use zero, a conservative family-agreed amount, and a foregone-income or replacement-care amount to see whether the choice is robust
  • Read included visits with the extra-visit fee. An annual base alone can conceal the cost of a wetter or faster-growth year
  • Treat five-year PV as a repeated-input scenario. It is not a forecast of Korean fuel, wages, inflation, equipment replacement, or contractor prices
  • Assess provider quality separately. Insurance, supervision, completion evidence, rework, cancellation, and liability are outside the cost formula

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator not insert an average service price?

A quote for one grave can cover very different areas, access distances, slopes, vegetation, removal, photographs, and tax treatment. Treating one average as a fact could hide the site surcharge that drives the decision. Market-price fields therefore start at zero and require actual evidence.

What hourly value should a family use?

There is no statutory answer. A family may use foregone pay, leave, replacement care, ordinary hourly earnings, or a mutually agreed opportunity value. Compare zero, a conservative amount, and a current personal value to see whether the preferred option changes easily.

Should equipment purchase be zero when the mower is already owned?

A zero new-purchase scenario can be useful when the decision does not require another mower. Keep upkeep, storage, consumables, PPE, and likely replacement burden where relevant. For a more conservative economic view, enter a supportable remaining value and remaining useful life as a separate scenario.

Is a missing visit-frequency break-even an error?

Not necessarily. When the per-visit service price is at or below family cash plus time cost per visit, increasing the annual frequency cannot recover the family fixed cost, so no positive crossover exists. The value is also absent until a non-zero per-visit quote is entered.

Does the cheaper option mean the provider is better?

No. The calculator compares cost and confirmed visit scope. It does not score workmanship, schedule reliability, safety controls, insurance, rework response, or reputation. Define completion evidence, rework, refund, cancellation, and responsibility before contracting.

Does this include moving or exhuming the grave?

No. Moving remains, cremation, enshrinement, natural burial, or reburial is a separate one-time event with different procedures and costs. Use the grave-relocation calculator for that planning question and verify the current process with the competent local authority.
