Turn measured space into a seedling order
This planting grid calculator counts stem positions in rectangular areas after allowing for paths, edge clearance and your confirmed spacing. Two fields with the same area can hold different integer grids because their dimensions and access paths differ. Dividing total area by spacing area alone does not capture the first plant at an edge or the unused width in each bed.
Use it to plan a vegetable plot, pool the same seedlings across several areas, or prepare an order for a nursery. It calculates quantities from a specified layout; it does not prescribe crop spacing, planting density, survival rates or yield. Confirm spacing for your variety and growing method first, then compare the layout with the available pack size. Geometry is country independent; dimensions are metric and the quote field uses KRW.
Units and the meaning of a stem center
Dimensions and clearance
Enter field width and length in meters and edge clearance in centimeters. Clearance is the minimum distance from an edge to the nearest stem center, not the visible gap between foliage and a path. The same value applies at outer edges and beside paths; split the plan into separate rectangles where conditions differ.
Row and in-row spacing
Row spacing runs across the width between parallel rows. In-row spacing runs along the length between plants in one row. Swapping the values can change the count, so choose the row direction on site first. These fields do not represent pot diameters or leaf widths.
Field dimensions and reserve percentage accept two decimal places; cm fields, counts and prices accept whole numbers. For example, enter 100 cm for a spacing of one meter. You can clear and replace a number or paste a comma-formatted value. Changing inputs hides the old result until you calculate again.
Equal beds separated by full-length paths
Paths run along the full field length and divide its width into equal beds. One path creates two beds; two paths create three. The calculator does not locate paths automatically. If an existing path is off-center or widths differ, enter the remaining rectangles as separate zones with zero internal paths.
Clearance also applies beside paths
Path width measures the walkway itself. An additional clearance remains on both sides between the walkway and the nearest stem centers. More paths therefore remove both walkway area and additional edge-clearance area. A positive path count requires a positive width, and combined path width must be less than field width.
With zero paths, the saved path-width value is ignored. An available center span of exactly zero allows one center on that axis. A negative span produces no planting positions, so that zone contributes zero to the order.
The planting grid formula
Convert lengths to centimeters. Let W be width, L length, b clearance, k path count, t path width, r row spacing and s in-row spacing. The floor operation rounds down and ceil rounds up. After counting the grid, split any remaining span equally between its two ends.
Beds B = k + 1; bed width = (W − k × t) ÷ B.
Usable center width U = bed width − 2b; usable center length V = L − 2b.
Rows per bed = floor(U ÷ r) + 1; plants per row = floor(V ÷ s) + 1. A negative span gives zero on that axis.
Zone planting count = B × rows per bed × plants per row.
Remaining width = U − (rows − 1) × r; remaining length = V − (plants per row − 1) × s.
The additional one counts both endpoints: three gaps separate four stem centers. This is why a center-based grid can differ from an area-density estimate. Zero clearance may place centers on outer or path edges; check whether that is practical before ordering. Whole-centimeter arithmetic preserves exact row boundaries even when equal bed widths are fractional.
Separate reserve plants from pack surplus
Reserve and purchase target
For total planting count T, extra reserve = ceil(T × reserve percentage ÷ 100). The purchase target is T plus that reserve. Reserve is a chosen extra quantity, not predicted mortality or a survival guarantee. Even with zero reserve, whole-pack rounding can create spare plants.
Packs and spare plants
Packs = ceil(purchase target ÷ plants per pack). Ordered quantity equals packs multiplied by pack size. Pack-rounding surplus is ordered quantity minus the target. Spare after planting is ordered quantity minus planting count and includes the reserve.
Pool only areas using the same variety and sale specification. The calculator sums planting positions first, then rounds reserve and packs once for the whole order. Different varieties or tray specifications need separate plans. Enter the price of one whole pack in KRW. A price of zero means not entered rather than free supply; quantity results still work.
From field measurements to a nursery order
Measure width and length, and divide irregular boundaries around drains or obstacles into non-overlapping rectangles. Label them on a site sketch to prevent double counting.
Enter confirmed spacing, access-path width and edge clearance. Check working access instead of reducing confirmed spacing merely to increase the count.
Add other zones for the same variety and enter the supplier’s pack quantity and whole-pack price. For plants sold individually, use a pack size of one.
Calculate and review beds, rows, plants per row, the diagram and spare quantity. Measure a trial row from the first to the last center to catch unit or direction errors.
Save the TXT order plan or print it. Confirm variety, specification, quantity, delivery date and included charges with the supplier. Saving a report does not send a purchase request or make a payment.
Worked example: a 10 × 20 m field
Assume 50 cm clearance, one 100 cm full-length path, 100 cm row spacing and 50 cm in-row spacing. The two beds are each 4.5 m wide, with a usable center width of 3.5 m and length of 19 m. Each bed holds 4 rows of 39 plants: 312 plants in total. The reserve and prices below are fictional checking values, not crop recommendations or supplier quotes.

The remaining width is 50 cm across both ends, adding 25 cm to clearance on each side. The first stem center is 75 cm from the left edge of each bed and 50 cm from its top edge. Planting count 312 plus reserve 16 plus pack surplus 22 reconciles to the 350 plants ordered.
Read the remaining area and diagram correctly
Outside-grid area is not extra planting space
The example has 200 m² of total land, a 133 m² usable center region and 67 m² excluded by paths and clearance. Rectangles connecting the outermost stem centers cover 114 m², leaving 19 m² inside the center region but outside those grid rectangles. This does not measure unused ground after allowing for roots or canopies. A single-row grid can have zero center-rectangle area while still containing plants.
The diagram shows only the first of the identical beds in each zone. Green dots are stem centers and gray indicates clearance. The horizontal and vertical axes use different scales for readability. If a count exceeds twelve on an axis, only up to twelve sampled positions are drawn on that axis. Use the beds × rows × plants-per-row calculation and the TXT report for exact quantities.
Practical multi-zone scenarios
Several vegetable beds
Enter each rectangle intended for the same seedlings and pool the quantity. If measured dimensions already exclude paths, do not subtract paths again. Record whether edge clearance was already excluded from measurements to avoid removing the same strip twice.
An existing orchard or uneven paths
Divide available planting space around existing trees and structures into separate rectangles. Enter unequal beds separately instead of using equal-path division. The calculator does not subtract existing trees automatically or optimize around an irregular boundary.
Once plant quantity is settled, check irrigation capacity and soil or fertilizer purchases separately. Plant counts, water use and nutrient mass answer different questions. Do not automatically reuse the seedling reserve as a loss percentage for other materials.
Limits to check before ordering
Use horizontal rectangular dimensions. Irregular borders, slope distances, machinery turning areas, diagonal or staggered planting and future canopy growth are not modeled.
The grid follows your supplied spacing. A larger count does not mean better growing conditions; confirm variety, light, airflow and working access separately.
Reserve adds a chosen quantity to the order. It does not reverse-calculate a mortality rate or guarantee establishment; consider storage and planting schedules with the supplier.
Use up to 12 zones and 20 paths per zone. Plans exceeding 10 million planting positions or KRW 1 trillion of material cost must be split.
Only entered whole-pack prices are multiplied. Shipping, planting labor, equipment, stakes, irrigation facilities and separate taxes are not added automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Does this recommend crop spacing?
No. Enter spacing already confirmed for the variety and growing method. Default spacing is only a worked example.
What if a path is only on one side?
Enter the remaining rectangular planting area as its own zone with zero internal paths. Recheck clearance from its edges to stem centers.
Why can the count exceed an area-density estimate?
This model counts both endpoint centers inside the cleared boundary. If clearance is too small or zero, replace it with a practical value for your site.
Can I combine different varieties?
Use one plan for the same variety and sale specification. Calculate different varieties separately so whole-pack rounding does not pool incompatible stock.
Are reserve and pack surplus the same?
Reserve is an intentional addition. Pack surplus results from rounding up to a sale unit. Spare after planting includes both.
Can I plant more in the remaining area?
No such conclusion follows. The figure is outside the stem-center rectangle, not empty land after accounting for roots and canopies.
Can I calculate without a price?
Yes. With a zero price, quantities remain available and cost is unpriced when an order is needed. If planting count is zero, cost is zero.
What does the saved order plan contain?
The TXT includes dimensions, paths, clearance, spacing, planting quantities, reserve, pack specification, total order, spare plants and entered-price cost. Recalculate after any edit before saving.
