How much potting mix should you buy?

A pot’s outside dimensions do not describe the space available for fresh growing medium.
Its walls, empty space below the rim and retained rootball all affect the amount of new mix required.
This calculator subtracts an optional bottom layer and retained rootball from the filled interior, then pools requirements across pots before rounding to whole bags.

Use it after choosing a suitable pot and growing medium for your plant.
It estimates material quantities, without determining whether a plant needs repotting or prescribing a soil mixture.
Dimensions are centimeters, volumes are liters and all entered prices are KRW, including on this English page.

Supported pots and what to measure

Round pots

Measure top and bottom inside diameters and full inside height.
The model assumes a circular truncated cone with straight walls; equal diameters produce a cylinder.
Enter diameters across the center, not radii.

Rectangular pots

Measure inside width, depth and height.
The model is a rectangular prism with vertical walls.
It does not support rectangular pots that narrow toward the bottom.

Have a ruler, the labeled bag volumes, an estimate of the retained rootball volume and actual bag prices ready.
Bulging urns, internal reservoirs, double bottoms and large internal projections are outside the model.
A nominal pot size or a measurement across the outside rim should not replace an inside measurement.

Headspace, rootball and bottom layer

Headspace below the rim

This is the vertical gap between the intended soil surface and the rim.
The calculator subtracts it from full inside height to find the fill level.
For a tapered round pot, enter the diameter at the rim; the diameter at the soil surface is calculated separately.

Retained rootball

Enter the volume in liters of roots and attached soil that will remain in each new pot.
Do not automatically use the full labeled capacity of the old pot, especially if you remove some old soil.
Use separate groups when rootball volumes differ, even if the new pots have identical dimensions.

Optional bottom layer

Enter the thickness only if you have already decided to use a separate bottom material.
The default is 0 cm, and no recommended thickness is calculated.
The model assumes that the rootball sits entirely within the filled space above the layer, with no overlap.
Check its physical width and height separately.

Volume formulas

One liter is 1,000 cm³.
For a round pot, B is the bottom inside diameter, T the top inside diameter, H the full inside height and z the height measured from the bottom.
A straight wall means the diameter changes linearly with height.

Diameter: d(z) = B + (T − B) × z ÷ H

Round partial volume: V(z) = π × z × (B² + B × d(z) + d(z)²) ÷ 12 ÷ 1,000

Rectangular partial volume: V(z) = width × depth × z ÷ 1,000

New mix = V(height − headspace) − V(layer thickness) − rootball volume

For a pot that widens toward the top, multiplying full volume by the layer’s fraction of height overestimates the bottom layer.
The calculator uses the diameter at the top of that layer instead.
It then multiplies each per-pot material volume by the group’s count and sums all groups.

Step-by-step purchase planning

  1. Select the pot shape and enter its inside dimensions.
    Full height must run from the inside bottom to the rim, before deducting headspace.
  2. Enter retained rootball volume, optional layer thickness and the count of identical pots.
    Add a group whenever any of these conditions differ.
  3. Enter the labeled bag volume separately for potting mix and layer material.
    Calculate different mixes in separate runs because this plan pools only identical materials.
  4. Choose an optional purchase allowance and enter actual bag prices.
    The allowance is your assumption, not an automatic compaction recommendation.
    Leave prices at zero if you only want quantities.
  5. Calculate, check group subtotals and save the purchase plan as TXT.
    Changing an input hides the previous result; calculate again before saving an updated plan.

Worked example: three rectangular pots

Consider three pots measuring 20 × 20 × 25 cm inside, with no headspace, a 5 cm bottom layer and a 2 L retained rootball per pot.
The layer, allowance and prices below are fictional calculation inputs, not plant-care recommendations or market prices.

Geometric requirement

Each pot holds 10 L, including a 2 L bottom layer.
Subtracting the 2 L rootball leaves 6 L of new mix.
Three pots need 18 L of mix and 6 L of layer material.

Bag order

A 10% allowance gives targets of 19.8 L and 6.6 L.
With 10 L mix bags and 5 L layer bags, buy two bags of each.
Ordered volumes are 20 L and 10 L; bag-rounding surpluses are 0.2 L and 3.4 L.

At entered prices of 5,000 KRW per mix bag and 3,000 KRW per layer bag, total material cost is 16,000 KRW.
The extra allowance is separate from the surplus caused by buying whole bags.
Pooling requirements also avoids buying a full mix bag for every individual pot.

Reading bags, surplus and costs

  • Geometric requirement is the volume calculated from the measured shape.
    Purchase target adds your chosen allowance; with zero allowance they are equal.
  • Bags = ceil(pooled purchase target ÷ labeled bag liters).
    The calculation uses unrounded volumes, while the screen displays up to three decimal places.
    An almost identical displayed volume may therefore require another bag at a boundary.
  • Bag-rounding surplus = ordered bag volume − purchase target.
    This is not a guarantee of leftovers after planting: settling, spills and measurement errors can change actual use.
  • A zero price means not entered, rather than free.
    Total cost remains unavailable if a required material has no price.
    A material requiring zero bags costs zero, so an unused layer does not need a price.

Shipping and existing stock are excluded.
Compare your saved plan with stock on hand and check the seller’s pack size and final checkout price.
A bag labeled only in kilograms cannot be converted without product-specific density information; obtain its labeled volume instead.

Practical ways to use the plan

Several sizes in one repotting session

Add separate groups for large and small pots that use the same growing medium.
Their quantities are pooled before rounding to bags.
Keep plants needing different mixes in separate calculations even when repotting them on the same day.

Someone else places the order

The TXT plan includes dimensions, retained rootballs, layer thicknesses, counts and bag sizes.
Sharing these details helps avoid ordering a different bag size using an old bag count.
Specify product names separately because the plan is a quantity estimate, not a plant-care prescription.

Compare two bag sizes

Keep the pot inputs and recalculate with each bag size and its price.
Compare count, surplus, cost and available storage space.
This calculator does not search for the cheapest combination of mixed bag sizes.

A bottom layer is optional

Illinois Extension explains that gravel beneath potting soil does not improve drainage as commonly assumed.
Accordingly, the calculator defaults to no layer and estimates only material you have independently chosen to use.
Check the drainage holes and suitability of the growing medium separately.

The RHS repotting guide distinguishes retained rootballs from fresh compost and cautions against overpotting.
A large calculated empty volume is not a recommendation to use a larger pot.
Root pruning, species-specific mixtures, watering and plant health assessment are outside this tool’s scope.

Invalid inputs and measurement limits

Headspace must be less than full height, and layer thickness must be less than the remaining fill height.
If the retained rootball is larger than the filled space above the layer, the calculator reports the group number and withholds the purchase result.
It does not silently shrink your rootball input.
Check centimeters versus millimeters, diameter versus radius, and per-pot versus group rootball volumes.

Dimensions and volumes accept two decimal places; pot counts and KRW prices are whole numbers.
You can enter up to 20 groups with up to 100 identical pots per group; field ranges appear below each input.
Volume alone cannot prove that a rootball fits: a broad, shallow rootball and a narrow, tall one can have the same volume.
Compare physical width and height before planting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate without a bottom layer?

Yes.
Set its thickness to zero; layer volume and bags are both zero, and no layer volume is deducted from the filled pot.

Can I use my old pot’s labeled capacity as rootball volume?

Only if it approximates the volume actually retained.
Including old headspace or soil that you remove may underestimate fresh mix needs.

Is compaction included automatically?

No automatic compaction rate is used.
If you need extra material, choose an allowance based on your product and working assumptions.

Can I enter bags sold by weight?

This tool does not assume a density.
Obtain a product-specific volume in liters from the label or supplier.

Can fresh mix requirement be zero?

Yes, when the rootball equals the remaining filled space.
This does not confirm that the planting arrangement or plant health is appropriate.

Why are bags not rounded for each pot?

Identical materials can be shared between pots.
The tool adds their liter subtotals before rounding the total to bags once.

Can different growing media be pooled?

Calculate non-interchangeable mixes separately.
Each plan assumes one shared potting mix and one shared layer material.

What is included in the downloaded file?

The TXT file contains dimensions, counts, material subtotals, allowance, bag sizes, entered prices, ordered volumes and surplus.
Recalculate with current inputs before ordering.
