Start with the actual transport dimensions

All dimensions use mm (1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 1,000 mm). Include packaging and projections; measure the narrowest clear width and height with the door open. A dimension of 0 means unmeasured.

This checks a rigid box in a fixed orientation along straight sections. It does not guarantee delivery. Confirm approach / exit space, turns, stairs, elevators, weight and handling with the carrier.

Even if each section has a fitting orientation, no common orientation means turning space needs review. Zero clearance exactly meets your allowance. Approach / exit space and actual handling still need confirmation.

Check door clearance before ordering furniture

Having room for a sofa in its final position does not establish whether its package can reach that room.
Packaging, arms, handles and other projections can change the dimensions that matter during delivery.
This calculator compares a rigid bounding box with measured openings and straight corridors, then repeats the comparison for disassembled parts.

Use the results to prepare a carrier discussion before risking a failed delivery or return trip.
A clearance result is not a delivery guarantee.
Actual handling depends on the item and the site, and checking one doorway does not establish that the entire route works.
The tool does not calculate delivery charges, return fees or carrier liability.

What the comparison includes

Fixed orientations and shortfalls

Compare six orthogonal orientations by swapping the width, depth and height axes.
See cross-sectional width and height separately from travel length, with a shortfall for each measured section.
The calculator does not combine different fitting orientations into a claim that the whole route is passable.

Disassembly and review points

Compare the packaged item with the body and all separate pieces.
Keep turns, stairs, elevators and unmeasured sections on an explicit review list, then save the measurements and results.
This is a dimensional check, separate from moving or storage cost estimates.

Enter dimensions in the actual transport condition

Every input uses mm: 1 cm = 10 mm and 1 m = 1,000 mm.
Convert product dimensions before entering them; an input of 0 mm means unmeasured.
W, D and H refer to the original width, depth and height axes, even after an orientation changes.

Use a bounding box

Measure the box enclosing the outermost projections, including feet, handles, protective corners and packaging that remain during transport.
A curved sofa is treated as a rectangular box, so a model shortfall does not rule out every method using its actual shape.
Do not substitute guessed dimensions based on squeezing cushions or removing packaging.

By default, only the two orientations preserving the original H axis as vertical are candidates.
Confirm with the supplier that an item may be laid on its side or end before enabling the other four.
This permission is item-specific, especially for glass, mechanisms and assembled joints; the checkbox does not replace handling instructions.

Measure openings and choose a total allowance

  1. List the route in travel order from the building entrance to the intended room.
    Include internal doors and every narrowing corridor, not just the front door.
  2. Measure the clear opening with the door in the position it will occupy during delivery.
    Use the narrowest available width and height, accounting for handles, hinges and wall projections rather than the outside frame size.
  3. Record offset doors or changes of direction as turns.
    Use the dedicated review types for stairs, slopes, thresholds and elevators.

Add the allowance once to each dimension

A total allowance of 20 mm adds 20 mm to the required width and 20 mm to the required height.
If you want 10 mm on each side, enter 20 mm total; it is not doubled again.
The default 0 mm starts a geometry comparison and is not a recommended safety clearance.
Agree an allowance for measurement error, protection and hand space with the carrier.

Formulas and common orientations

Axis order and dimensional differences

The width / height / travel-axis combinations are W/H/D, D/H/W, W/D/H, H/D/W, D/W/H and H/W/D.
Travel length is the dimension pointing in the direction of movement.

  • Required width = oriented width + total allowance
  • Required height = oriented height + total allowance
  • Width clearance = measured width − required width
  • Height clearance = measured height − required height
  • Shortfall = max(0, −clearance)

Both clearances must be at least 0 to meet the allowance at a straight section.
A common candidate is one allowed orientation meeting the conditions at every measured straight section.
Zero clearance exactly meets your allowance, with no additional reserve beyond it.
Negative clearance is a shortfall, so inspect width and height separately.

Travel length is displayed but is not compared with door thickness as a rejection rule.
A long item can slide through an opening along a suitably aligned straight path.
However, the approach and exit space needed to line up the whole item, and the space needed to stand it up at its destination, remain outside this model.
Check the layout of walls, ceilings and entry / exit positions separately.

Include every disassembled part

Add up to 10 part entries after enabling the disassembly comparison.
A smaller main body does not mean a separate back or arm will fit, so do not test only the piece that appears largest.
Identical repeated pieces may share one dimensional entry once their dimensions are confirmed, but include every distinct shape.

Each piece must have its own common orientation; different pieces do not have to use the same orientation.
Ask whether disassembly is permitted, who performs it, where it happens, how reassembly works and what protective packaging remains.
Until confirmed, the after-disassembly figures remain assumptions.
Editing part inputs clears the confirmation checkbox.
Do not dismantle structural parts based solely on this result.

Worked example: a 900 mm entrance

These fictional figures are calculation fixtures, not standard door sizes or real product specifications.
Use an entrance measuring 900 × 2,050 mm and a corridor measuring 920 × 2,100 mm, with a total allowance of 20 mm.

Packaged item

For W2,100/D950/H900 mm in D/H/W orientation, the required section is 970 × 920 mm.
Width is short by 70 mm at the entrance and 50 mm in the corridor.
Spare height cannot compensate for insufficient width.

Disassembled body

A W2,000/D850/H800 mm body needs 870 × 820 mm in that orientation.
Width / height clearances are 30 / 1,230 mm at the entrance and 50 / 1,280 mm in the corridor.
The other sample piece, W600/D400/H100 mm, is tested separately.

If every part and the disassembly method are confirmed, and all sections are measured and straight, the result shows clearance in the straight-section model.
Loading the example does not tick the confirmation automatically.
Add any corner after the entrance as a separate section: the same dimensions then require an on-site review.

Passing each door is not the same as passing the route

Different orientations fit different openings

Consider a W900/D700/H600 mm item with 0 mm allowance and tilt permitted.
A 700 mm width and 600 mm height fit an 800 × 650 mm opening.
A 600 mm width and 700 mm height fit the next 650 × 800 mm opening.
No single fixed orientation fits both, so space to change orientation between them needs checking.

This is neither a finding that delivery is impossible nor a promise that rotating the item will work.
The swept space during a rotation can exceed the starting and finishing cross-sections.
Landings, stair rails, elevator interiors and corridor corners require more than two dimensions.
Include the sections between doors and mark the intended direction of movement on photographs or a floor plan.

What each result means

  • Enter / measure dimensions: at least one item dimension or straight-section measurement is missing.
    An input of 0 is not interpreted as a physically zero-width opening.
  • Shortfall at a checked straight section: no allowed orthogonal orientation fits that section.
    Send the shortfall figures to discuss another item, confirmed disassembly or a different route.
  • Check space to change orientation: each section has a fitting orientation, but there is no common candidate.
    Review the space between sections separately.
  • On-site / disassembly confirmation needed: a section lies outside the model or the disassembly assumptions are unconfirmed.
    Read the review list even if another status takes priority.
  • Clearance in the straight-section model: the entered dimensional conditions are met.
    This does not approve delivery, staffing, weight limits or handling safety.

Frequently asked questions

Does a doorway diagonal prove that furniture will fit?

One diagonal does not establish item width, thickness or turning space.
This calculator checks orthogonal orientations, not a continuous search through diagonal tilt angles.

Can I use dimensions with cushions compressed?

Compression and flexibility are not modeled.
Use reduced dimensions only when the manufacturer and carrier confirm the actual shape can be maintained during transport.

Can I enter the space after removing a door?

Treat it as a separate scenario only after confirming permission and responsibility for removal.
Verify the remaining clear opening rather than assuming the frame, hinges and handles all disappear.

What is the correct allowance?

There is no universal value for every item and building.
Agree a value for measurement error, packaging, hand space and handling; the default 0 mm is not a safety recommendation.

Can a wide elevator doorway count as a straight section?

An elevator also needs internal alignment and maneuvering space.
Select Elevator to stop automatic checking there and confirm interior dimensions and loading conditions separately.

What if only one disassembled part is too large?

All parts are assessed, so a shortfall for any part produces a shortfall result for the disassembled scenario.
Inspect that part to identify the section and dimensional constraint.

Is an input of zero the same as zero clearance?

No.
An input dimension of 0 means unmeasured, while calculated clearance of 0 exactly meets the selected allowance.
With zero allowance too, the dimensions may match exactly.

Can I confirm delivery using the saved report?

The report is discussion material.
Send it with product specifications, photos, a route plan and the disassembly method, then obtain the carrier confirmation and scope of any extra work.
