Cabinet Door Weight & Hinge Quantity Calculator

Use dimensions and density or a measured door weight to review hinge quantities.
Check the Blum chart conditions and save a specification report for your cabinet maker.

The starting numbers are fictional. Replace them with your door measurements and exact hinge documentation.

700 kg/m³ is not a standard material density. Hinge planning quantities appear after you verify the chart conditions.

Dimensions describe one door. The estimate assumes a uniform rectangular panel. Weigh hollow, routed, composite or glass-faced doors and avoid counting hardware twice.

2. Hinge model and chart applicability

Supported scope: 4–22 kg including hardware, width up to 600 mm, height up to 2,500 mm, and height greater than width. Check substrate, screws, cup, plate, thickness and spacing against the exact model documentation.

3. Weight and quantity review

  • Record the exact hinge model.
  • Record the model drawing or cabinet-maker confirmation reference.
  • Record the scale reading or panel and density evidence.
  • Check the model, door thickness, substrate, screws, cup, plate, spacing and chart applicability.

This is a planning quantity, not a guarantee of installation strength or compatibility. Ask the cabinet maker to check thickness, substrate, screw pull-out, machining and hinge spacing. Band selection uses unrounded weight even when the displayed value is rounded.

Hinge count, height ceilings and conservative weight bands
HingesHeight up to (mm)Weight band (kg)
27504 ≤ W < 6
31,5006 ≤ W < 12
42,10012 ≤ W < 17
52,50017 ≤ W 22

Use the larger of the height and weight counts. Shared 6, 12 and 17 kg endpoints use the upper band as this calculator’s conservative policy. No extrapolation below 4 kg, above 22 kg or beyond the width limit.

Why door weight and hinge quantity belong together

Replacing a kitchen or wardrobe door involves more than matching its finish and dimensions.
Panels with the same appearance can differ in density, thickness and finished weight.
Copying the existing hinge count can overlook those changes.

This cabinet door weight and hinge quantity calculator estimates panel mass from dimensions and verified density, or starts with a scale measurement and adds missing hardware.
It then compares height and total weight with the supported Blum product-family chart.
Use it to organize measurements and model evidence before discussing an order with your cabinet maker.

The decision this tool supports

Review hinge quantities for identical doors and identify missing evidence before ordering.
The tool does not estimate renovation costs or hardware prices, certify an installation, or determine that every hinge from the same brand is interchangeable.

Choose a weight method

Dimensions and density

Use height, width, thickness and a supplier-verified density for a uniform rectangular panel.
Add handles and finishes absent from the panel calculation.
The default 700 kg/m³ is a fictional example, not an approved density for any material.

Measured finished door

Deep routing, hollow construction, mixed materials and applied glass can make the rectangular estimate unsuitable.
Weigh the finished door when possible and retain the measurement record.
A recorded weight alone does not establish that the hinge chart applies to its construction.

These methods are alternatives, not additive.
Measured mode ignores previously entered thickness and density; dimensions mode ignores the scale reading.
Hidden values therefore cannot silently contribute to the result.

Understand the inputs and units

  • Height and width: measure one finished door in millimetres, not the cabinet opening or the combined width of paired doors.
  • Panel thickness: use the thickness associated with the stated density.
Do not include handle projection in the panel volume.
  • Verified density: the unit is kg/m³.
An area weight from a supplier cannot be entered directly as a density; obtain the appropriate specification or weigh the door.
  • Added hardware: enter only the weight absent from the panel or scale value.
Zero means you confirmed that no additional mass is needed; blank means unknown.
  • Identical doors: group only doors with matching dimensions, finished weight, hinge model and installation conditions.
Calculate different upper and lower cabinet doors separately.

The broad numeric input limits are application validation limits.
Being within them does not mean the manufacturer chart covers the door.

Volume, weight and quantity formulas

Convert the dimensions first

Volume (m³) = height (mm) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) / 1,000,000,000
Panel (kg) = volume (m³) × density (kg/m³)
Total door weight (kg) = panel or measured weight + missing hardware weight
Hinges per door = max(height band count, weight band count)
Total hinges = hinges per door × identical doors

The calculation never divides door weight by an invented per-hinge load rating.
It looks up the complete door conditions in a product-family chart.
The band decision uses unrounded weight, even when the display rounds decimal places, so recheck the original measurement near a boundary.

When a scale reading already includes every handle, finish and accessory, the included-hardware option sets added mass to zero.
An old hardware entry is ignored.
This option does not apply in dimensions mode, where panel and additional hardware are added together.

Chart bands and shared boundaries

Blum height ceilings and the calculator’s conservative weight bands
HingesHeight up to mmWeight W kg
27504 ≤ W < 6
31,5006 ≤ W < 12
42,10012 ≤ W < 17
52,50017 ≤ W ≤ 22

The original chart labels the weight bands 4–6, 6–12, 12–17 and 17–22 kg.
This calculator selects the upper band at the shared 6, 12 and 17 kg endpoints.
That is its conservative planning policy, not a legal rule or warranty boundary.
A height exactly on a ceiling stays in that height band; any excess moves to the next one.

When a quantity is withheld

Chart coverage and installation verification are separate

The supported total weight is 4–22 kg, maximum width is 600 mm and maximum height is 2,500 mm.
Height must exceed width.
Outside these conditions the tool does not extrapolate a count by adding more hinges.

Selecting a family is insufficient if the exact model, installation reference or weight evidence is missing.
Glass-only, metal, lift-up, folding and other special doors need their own product information.
An unsupported result means this automatic lookup cannot be used, not that the product is impossible to install.

The standard test drawing in the Blum source shows 600×600×19mm and approximately 6.5kg.
Those dimensions are not universal material or thickness allowances for every model.
Verify the specific cup, mounting plate, screws, substrate, thickness and spacing before confirming applicability.
Editing an input clears that confirmation.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Measure a single door and count only genuinely identical doors.
Split the review when specifications differ.
  2. Select estimation or measurement, account for handles and hardware once, and record the scale result or supplier density evidence.
  3. Choose the product family, record the exact hinge code and add the drawing revision or cabinet-maker confirmation.
Similar appearance does not establish model equivalence.
  4. Compare thickness, substrate, cup, plate, screws and spacing with the model and market documentation.
If evidence is missing, resolve the withheld reasons before checking confirmation.
  5. Review per-door and batch quantities, save the TXT specification report and send it with your door photographs and actual installation drawing.

Worked examples

Two fictional panel doors

A 720 mm high, 500 mm wide and 18 mm thick panel with an assumed density of 700 kg/m³ has a volume of 0.00648 m³ and a panel mass of 4.536 kg.
Adding 0.2 kg of hardware gives 4.736 kg per door.
After all model and application conditions are verified, both bands give two hinges, so two identical doors give four hinges in total.
The starting fictional example has no verified evidence, so it shows weight while withholding quantity.

Tall and light

A 500 mm wide, 2,000 mm high door with a finished weight of 5 kg gives four by height and two by weight.
Use four after the remaining conditions are verified.
Low weight does not remove the height requirement.

Short and heavy

A 500 mm wide, 720 mm high door weighing 13 kg gives two by height and four by weight.
Use four after the remaining conditions are verified.
The actual material and thickness still need to match the chosen model.

Practical replacement and ordering checks

Changing handles or finishes

Metal handles and applied finishes can change total mass without changing panel dimensions.
List the added mass per door and cross-check it against a finished-door measurement when possible.
Do not add a handle again if it was already present on the scale.

Ordering a batch

Compare all door dimensions before multiplying a count.
One heavy door cannot represent an assortment of different sizes.
Keep separate reports for each specification and distinguish single hinges, mounting-plate sets and package quantities on the purchase order.

For a sagging door, inspect loose screw holes, swollen or split panel material and cabinet-side fastening.
This tool does not test screw pull-out strength or repeated opening durability.
A higher hinge count alone does not establish that damaged substrate has been repaired.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply reuse the old hinge count?

Recheck the replacement door height and finished weight.
Identical dimensions can conceal changes in panel density, thickness, finish or handles.
If the old door sagged, inspect screw holes and cabinet sides as well as the count.

What belongs in the measured weight?

Use the finished door weight carried by the hinges.
Add only handles, finishes and hardware absent from the scale reading.
If everything is already attached, select the included-hardware option.
Measure differing doors separately instead of averaging them.

Can I use an average density for MDF or plywood?

An average is not evidence for the panel you are purchasing.
Obtain its density from the supplier or weigh the finished door.
The default 700 kg/m³ is fictional, not a standard value for MDF, plywood or solid wood.

What happens at exactly 6 kg?

The weight band gives three hinges because this calculator selects the upper shared band.
Height may require more.
The same conservative policy gives four at 12 kg and five at 17 kg; it is an application policy, not a manufacturer warranty threshold.

What about a tall, light wardrobe door?

The larger height or weight count applies.
A 2,000 mm high, 5 kg door uses the height count of four after other conditions are verified.
Placement still needs a drawing review for shelf and connector interference.

Why is the quantity withheld below 4 kg?

The implemented weight chart spans 4–22 kg.
Withholding does not mean a lighter door cannot be installed; this tool simply does not extrapolate the chart.
Use model-specific small-door documentation or the manufacturer configurator.

Can I add one hinge to a 650 mm wide door?

This calculator follows the 600 mm maximum in the 2026 material.
It does not automatically transfer an older blog exception to a current model.
Obtain the exact model and market documentation and ask the manufacturer or cabinet maker.

Does the result guarantee installation strength?

No.
It is a planning reference rather than a certification.
Verify the hinge code, cup, mounting plate, screws, substrate, thickness and machining.
Compare the saved report with your cabinet maker and check whether your order includes mounting plates or hinges alone.

Sources and update scope

Verified on 2026-09-24 using page 31 of the Blum 2026–2027 material for the main chart.
The older assembly article supplies context for additional weights and door shape; its width exception is not merged into the newer limit.
Recheck applicability whenever the product chart or model drawing changes.

This is a product-documentation tool, not a Korean statutory load or safety certification calculator.
Density and fastening evidence are supplied by the user.
The same brand name does not establish that a chart applies to every model or sales market.

Save the specification for your cabinet maker

The TXT report includes dimensions, weight method, added hardware, exact model, evidence, applicability status and either a quantity or the reasons it is withheld.
A withheld report is still useful for requesting missing information.
Before ordering, compare the exact model drawing and source chart, then confirm the required mounting plates and screws.
