The first payment and the ten-year household cost answer different questions

A per-tooth veneer price, a per-tooth direct-composite price, and a whole-case orthodontic quote do not cover the same units or timeline. Veneers and composite can scale with the number of teeth and later involve repair or complete redo events. Orthodontics can add diagnostics, monthly adjustment charges, active-treatment time, retainers, retention reviews, and possible retreatment. Financing can also create a monthly cash peak that is hidden by a headline total.

This calculator puts user-entered final quotes and user-entered maintenance assumptions on the same 1-, 5-, and 10-year calendar. It does not diagnose a dental condition, decide whether enamel preparation is required, predict restoration life, determine orthodontic feasibility, or rank clinical outcomes. Use it only after a dentist identifies the clinically possible paths and explains their materially different effects.

The optional synthetic-data button exists so a user can inspect how events move through the tables before collecting quotes. Those figures are deliberately labeled as fictional inputs. Reset the form, replace every amount and cycle with current written information, and keep a dated copy of each provider’s scope before using the result for a real budget conversation.

Copy the tax-inclusive per-tooth quote, diagnostic or temporary-work cost, written repair terms, and complete-redo amount. The American Dental Association explains that veneer placement can be irreversible when enamel is removed and that veneers can chip, crack, wear, or loosen. That information supports clinical questions; it does not supply a fixed replacement cycle for this calculator.

2 · Direct composite

Separate touch-up, repair, and full redo

Polishing or stain management, fracture repair, and complete replacement are different quote lines. Enter a per-tooth amount and only the cycles that the provider has explained for budgeting. ADA patient guidance notes that composite may require less enamel removal and can be easier to repair, while being less resistant to staining and wear than porcelain; it does not make composite suitable for every case.

3 · Orthodontics

Track treatment and retention separately

Enter one whole-case treatment quote; the tooth-count field does not multiply it. Check diagnostics, extractions, anchorage screws, monthly adjustment fees, breakage, initial retainers, later retainer replacement, and early-termination terms. The British Orthodontic Society says nearly all patients need retainers and that long-term wear, repair, or replacement may be needed, but it does not establish one universal interval.

Normalize every quote before comparing it

South Korean non-covered prices can be provider-specific. A disclosed price is useful for comparison, but it may not match the final material, number of teeth, diagnostics, tax, and aftercare in your case. Ask each provider to put the same scope in writing and record the quote date.

How to use the calculator

  1. Confirm the clinically possible paths. Ask a dentist to assess decay, gums, bite, grinding, enamel, alignment, and functional concerns before treating three price columns as alternatives.
  2. Collect final quotes on one scope. Confirm the number of teeth, materials, diagnostics, visits, retainers, warranty, and VAT. Use tax-inclusive figures rather than adding tax automatically.
  3. Enter planned recurrence assumptions. Use provider-explained repair, redo, retainer, and retreatment amounts. Leave an unknown cycle at zero rather than accepting a hidden market-average lifespan.
  4. Separate financing from present value. Installment months and total financing fees change the cash calendar. The annual discount rate changes only the present-value view.
  5. Read warnings and sensitivity. Review 1-, 5-, and 10-year totals, peak monthly outflow, the cost breakdown, and cycle sensitivity. Take any missing-scope warning back to the provider.

Calculation model

Veneer and composite events

Initial cost = final quote per tooth × tooth count + fixed preparation cost + total financing fee.
Annual maintenance is added every 12 months.
Complete redo and local repair are added at the cycles entered by the user.
When repair and complete redo land in the same month, the redo replaces the repair so the amount is not counted twice.

Orthodontic events

Initial cost = whole-case quote + diagnostics + first retainers + total financing fee.
Monthly visit charges are added during the entered active-treatment months.
Annual retention review begins 12 months after active treatment ends. Retainer replacement and retreatment follow only the cycles and amounts entered by the user.

Nominal cost, present value, and cash peak

Nominal cost is the sum of all entered events through the last month of a horizon. Present value discounts each event by amount ÷ (1 + annual rate)event month ÷ 12, then rounds the result to one Korean won. Annualized and monthly-equivalent values divide that present value by the horizon. Peak monthly outflow groups all events in the same month and reports the largest group. A zero discount rate makes nominal and present-value totals equal.

Read a deterministic worked example

These figures test the formula; they are not Korean averages, recommended prices, clinical lifespans, or warranty customs. Assume two teeth, a zero discount rate, one-month payment, and no repair or warranty. Veneers use KRW 100,000 per tooth, KRW 10,000 fixed preparation, KRW 10,000 annual maintenance, and a complete redo every five years. Composite uses KRW 50,000 per tooth, KRW 5,000 annual maintenance, and a complete redo every four years. Orthodontics uses a KRW 300,000 whole-case quote, two KRW 20,000 monthly visits, KRW 60,000 initial retainers, KRW 10,000 annual retention, and KRW 30,000 retainer replacement every two years after treatment.

Composite is the lower cost in this synthetic input at all three horizons. That statement is arithmetic only. Replace every figure with scope-aligned quotes and keep the dentist’s clinical assessment separate.

Interpret sensitivity and break-even carefully

Cycle sensitivity

The table recalculates ten-year present value at 75%, 100%, and 125% of each entered complete-redo or retreatment cycle. Repair amounts, retainer replacement, discount rate, and all prices stay unchanged. A cycle entered as zero remains disabled. If a modest cycle shift changes the cost order, treat the ranking as fragile and ask for a wider written scenario range.

Redo-cycle break-even

For each path with an entered redo cost, the model searches cycle lengths from 0.5 to 30 years in 0.5-year steps. It finds the minimum cycle at which that path is no more expensive than the lower current ten-year present value of the other two paths. This is an algebraic threshold under your inputs, not a biological life estimate or recommended treatment interval.

Warranty, zero values, and financing boundaries

  • A warranty reduction applies only when written-warranty confirmation is selected and both duration and reduction are entered.
  • Warranty approval, number of claims, breakage cause, patient fault, laboratory cost, and exclusions remain contract questions.
  • Zero does not mean free care. It can mean that the price or cycle has not yet been entered; the result surfaces a warning.
  • If only one side of a cost-and-cycle pair is entered, the repeated event is disabled to avoid inventing timing.
  • Initial cost plus total financing fee is divided across the selected months, with any one-won remainder placed in the last installment.
  • All money inputs are capped at KRW 100,000,000, tooth count at 1–20, annual discount at 0–20%, active treatment at 0–60 months, and repeated cycles at zero or 0.5–30 years.

South Korea non-covered care and tax context in 2026

The current Medical Service Act was checked through the Korean National Law Information Center OPEN API on August 29, 2026. The checked version is law ID 001788, MST 285327, effective April 7, 2026. Article 45 requires providers to disclose non-covered charges and prohibits charging above the disclosed amount; Article 45-2 provides for reporting, surveys, and publication. HIRA public price information is therefore a useful comparison source, but it remains provider-submitted information rather than a final quote for one material and tooth scope.

The Rules on the Standards for National Health Insurance Benefits were checked in law ID 006697, MST 285513, effective April 15, 2026. Article 9 points to Appendix 2. Cosmetic orthodontics that is not intended to improve function is generally listed as non-covered, with separately defined exceptions such as qualifying functional chewing or speech treatment related to congenital maxillofacial anomalies. The calculator does not determine whether a patient meets an exception or whether a private policy pays.

VAT Act Article 30 sets the 10% rate in the checked law ID 001571, MST 276117, effective January 2, 2026. VAT Act Enforcement Decree Article 35 excludes specified cosmetic dental shaping, including whitening, veneers, and gingival cosmetic procedures, from the medical-service exemption. Because a provider’s invoicing scope controls, this calculator does not add 10% automatically; enter the final tax-inclusive quote instead.

Income Tax Act Enforcement Decree Article 118-5 excludes cosmetic or plastic surgery expenses from the medical-expense tax credit. The checked version is law ID 003956, MST 286211, effective July 1, 2026. Purpose, records, insurance terms, and tax evidence can differ by case, so no insurance payment or tax credit is automatically deducted from lifecycle cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Korean average prices not prefilled

Non-covered price and scope vary by provider, material, teeth, tests, tax, and aftercare. A national-looking default can be mistaken for a personal budget. Every money field therefore starts at zero, and the optional synthetic button is clearly marked as a formula example rather than market data.

Does tooth count multiply orthodontic cost

No. Tooth count multiplies only per-tooth veneer and composite figures. The orthodontic treatment quote, diagnostics, visits, retainers, and retreatment amounts are entered as whole-case costs.

Does a written warranty make every repair free

No. The model applies only the entered reduction during the entered term after confirmation is selected. Actual approval can depend on claim count, cause, exclusions, patient obligations, materials, and laboratory fees. The result is not a warranty authorization.

Should I choose the lowest ten-year present value

Not from the cost result alone. Irreversible preparation, periodontal and bite status, restorative risk, orthodontic feasibility, treatment time, retention, and the result you value require a dentist’s examination and informed discussion. The calculator helps test affordability after clinical options are defined.
