Korea housework and care labor value calculator guide

This English page translates the Korean housework and care labor value calculator and calls calculateHouseworkCareLaborValue. It preserves market replacement rates, opportunity-cost rates, minimum-wage comparison, and care-housework totals.

Market replacement method

The market replacement method values unpaid labor by multiplying weekly hours by market hourly rates and converting to monthly and annual values. The Korean page uses rates such as housekeeper or cook KRW 15,000, laundry KRW 13,000, babysitter KRW 12,960, tutor KRW 25,000, care worker KRW 12,960, and disability activity assistant KRW 16,150.

The result separates housework total, care total, grand total weekly hours, daily value, monthly value, annual value, and weighted hourly rate. This lets a household see the economic value of repeated unpaid work rather than treating it as zero.

Opportunity-cost method

The opportunity-cost method values the same hours at the income the caregiver could otherwise earn. The Korean content uses hourly rates by education level: high school KRW 12,500, college KRW 15,000, university KRW 19,000, and graduate school KRW 25,000, with an optional custom hourly rate.

Opportunity-cost value can be higher or lower than market replacement value depending on education, work history, local labor market, and available working hours. The calculator keeps both approaches so the result is not reduced to one moral or legal number.

Minimum wage and social context

The Korean content uses a 2026 minimum wage assumption of KRW 10,320 per hour and KRW 2,156,880 per month for comparison. The calculator reports the minimum-wage monthly value and the ratio between market replacement value and minimum wage value.

The article notes OECD unpaid-labor estimates from roughly 10% to 39% of GDP and cites a Korea estimate around 25.5%. It also notes that women in Korea perform about 21 hours per week of unpaid labor in common survey framing.

Family law and household planning

The Korean page connects unpaid labor value to Civil Act Article 839-2 on property division. Courts often review homemaker contribution, marriage duration, childcare, caregiving, asset formation, and income history; the contribution ratio is not fixed by the calculator.

The Household Worker Act has applied since June 16, 2022, and the Korean article mentions certified service providers. For family planning, divorce settlement, care burden discussions, or paid-service replacement, the calculator gives an economic reference point that should be supported by records.
