Monthly cost plus time value

The commute optimizer converts salary into an hourly time value using annual work hours, unless the user enters a direct hourly value. It then compares car, public transit, bike or micromobility, taxi or carpool, and a mixed park-and-ride route by direct monthly cost and by cost plus time value.

Car cost uses the same fuel-price assumptions as other Korean mobility pages: KRW 1,680 gasoline, KRW 1,520 diesel, KRW 1,050 LPG, and KRW 292 per kWh for EV. If maintenance is included, the model adds KRW 200,000 depreciation, KRW 60,000 insurance, KRW 25,000 tax, and KRW 30,000 repair or consumables each month.

  • Seoul transit fare defaults to KRW 1,550 subway, KRW 1,500 city bus, and KRW 3,000 express bus.
  • K-Pass in this optimizer refunds 20 percent after 15 or more monthly rides.
  • The Seoul Climate Card is modeled at KRW 62,000 when the region is Seoul.
  • The Modu Card threshold uses KRW 62,000 as the base in the optimizer.

Cheapest, fastest, and optimal are different

The cheapest method looks only at direct monthly money outflow. The fastest method looks at one-way minutes. The optimal method adds the monetary value of commute time to direct cost, so a slightly more expensive but much faster route can win.

Mixed routes include a first leg by car, bike, or kickboard and a second leg by subway, city bus, or express bus. Transfer parking is modeled separately because Korean commuter station lots can change the economics of park-and-ride commuting.
