How many skeins should you order?
This knitting gauge, yarn weight and skein calculator connects the area and weight of your own swatch with the finished area of each project piece.
Use it for rectangular blankets, scarves or separately measured garment panels to estimate grams, pool requirements by yarn and color, and plan whole skeins to buy.
It helps you review a purchase quantity before starting a project and discovering that more yarn is needed.
There is no built-in standard yarn allowance for every sweater.
Fabric density depends on the yarn, stitch pattern and your tension, so the model uses your measurements.
Save the plan and use the product, color and lot notes when checking availability with the seller.
The calculation cannot reserve stock or guarantee a matching dye lot.
Three pieces of information

Separate gauge measurements from swatch weight
Gauge: the center 10 cm
Count stitches across 10 cm and rows over 10 cm in the center of the swatch, where edge distortion can be avoided.
These optional measurements produce reference stitch and row counts for your finished dimensions.
They do not add pattern repeats or edge stitches automatically.
Weight: the whole measured sample
Enter the full width and height of the dry fabric placed on the scale.
A 20 × 20 cm sample has an area of 400 cm².
Using its entire weight with only a 10 × 10 cm center area would overstate density fourfold in this example.
All dimensions are in cm; the calculator does not treat 4 inches as exactly 10 cm.
Convert your measurements first.
Use the yarn, needles or hook, stitch pattern and tension intended for the project, and wash and dry the swatch as you will the finished item.
Weigh the dry fabric without needles, pins or other objects.
What the yarn and color fields mean
Skein weight and label length
Grams per skein means the mass stated on the product label, not the yarn weight category such as DK or bulky.
If you enter meters per skein, the calculator uses that same product’s length-to-mass ratio to estimate target and ordered lengths.
Leave length at 0 when unknown; grams and skein counts will still work.
Usable stock and separate finishing grams
Stock includes only yarn available for the planned work.
Exclude yarn already locked into a swatch you will retain.
Add new swatches you need to make, seaming yarn or other separately measured finishing requirements under extra grams.
If you unravel and reuse a swatch, count the usable yarn in stock and do not also add it as a new separate requirement.
Prices and identifying notes
Prices are entered in KRW for both language versions; no currency conversion occurs.
A price of 0 means not entered, not free.
The total budget stays unavailable if any yarn requiring an order has no price.
Separate incompatible products or dye lots even when they share a color name, and keep identifying details in the note field.
Piece areas and different stitch patterns
Finished width and height describe one piece.
For matching front and back panels measuring 50 × 60 cm each, enter count 2; do not double the width and then also double the count.
For cutouts such as necklines or armholes, divide the intended area into measured rectangles if you want a closer approximation.
Using the full bounding rectangle generally includes additional area, but the result is still not a shaped garment pattern.
Use the swatch for that fabric
A border, sleeve or pocket with a different stitch pattern gets its own row and its own measured swatch.
No fixed multiplier assumes that a particular stitch always consumes a certain extra percentage.
Rows using one yarn may have different swatch densities; their grams are pooled for ordering.
The model does not automatically allocate individual yarns within stranded colorwork or fabric made with strands held together.
One plan supports up to 8 yarn/color groups and 30 piece rows.
You can combine multiple projects sharing the same product and compatible stock.
If their fabric conditions differ, supply the appropriate swatch for each piece rather than copying a density that no longer applies.
Yarn weight and skein formulas
From fabric area to grams
Swatch density = sample grams ÷ (sample width × sample height)
Piece area = finished width × finished height × count
Piece yarn weight = piece area × swatch density
Base grams per yarn = sum of its piece weights + separate swatch/finishing grams
From target to an order
Target grams = base grams × (1 + reserve percent ÷ 100)
Shortage grams = max(0, target grams − usable stock)
Skeins to order = ceil(shortage grams ÷ grams per skein)
Ordered grams = skeins to order × grams per skein
The ceil operation rounds a fractional skein up to the next whole skein.
Pool pieces using the same yarn before rounding, but round each different yarn/color independently.
Yarn left over in one color is not treated as a replacement for another color.
Orders use unrounded calculations rather than the rounded numbers displayed on screen.
Reference stitches = finished width × stitches per 10 cm ÷ 10; reference rows = finished height × rows per 10 cm ÷ 10.
These are per-piece values and retain fractions.
Before knitting, adjust to whole counts compatible with the actual pattern’s repeats, shaping and edges.
A zero gauge field leaves that reference result blank without preventing the mass estimate.
Step-by-step use
- Read the product, color, dye lot and grams from each yarn label and add each group.
Enter the price and meters only when known. - Enter finished piece dimensions and count, then select the yarn used.
Use count for identical pieces and a new row for another shape or stitch pattern. - Enter the full width, height and dry weight of the matching swatch.
Expand the optional center 10 cm gauge fields if reference stitch and row counts would help. - Check usable stock, separate swatch/finishing grams and your chosen reserve.
The default 0% means no added reserve and is not a recommendation. - Calculate and review the individual yarn orders and reserve comparison.
Editing inputs hides the previous result; calculate again before saving the TXT plan.
Worked purchase example
Swatch to fabric weight
The fictional sample measures 20 × 20 cm and weighs 20 g dry.
Density is 20 ÷ 400 = 0.05 g/cm².
Two 50 × 60 cm panels total 6,000 cm² and require an estimated 300 g.
A center gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm gives 100 stitches and 168 rows per panel.
Reserve and existing stock
Assume skeins of 50 g / 100 m, a 10% reserve, 20 g of usable stock and no separate finishing requirement.
The target is 330 g and the shortage is 310 g.
That is 6.2 skeins, rounded up to 7 skeins or 350 g ordered.
Target length is 660 m and ordered length is 700 m.
At a fictional entered price of 5,000 KRW per skein, the budget is 35,000 KRW.
Existing stock of 20 g plus the 350 g order leaves 40 g after the target 330 g is used.
This price is not a market average and excludes shipping.
With both reserve and stock set to 0, the same project requires exactly 6 skeins; raising only the reserve to 5% makes it 7 skeins.
Interpreting reserve and leftover yarn
Reserve allowance, skein-rounding surplus and final remaining stock are separate quantities.
Reserve is the extra amount you add to base requirements and is already included in the target.
Rounding surplus is the difference between the whole-skein order and the shortage.
Final remaining stock can also include pre-existing yarn that was never needed.
For a 330 g target with 400 g in stock, the order is 0 skeins, rounding surplus is 0 g and final remaining stock is 70 g.
Your reserve and five percentage points more
The comparison shows 0%, your selected percentage and five percentage points more, capped at 100%.
Duplicate percentages appear only once.
These are planning scenarios, not confidence intervals, shortage probabilities or recommended rates.
A higher gram requirement may leave the skein count and cost unchanged when the extra yarn fits within skeins already being ordered.
Useful scenarios and model limits
Single-color blankets and repeated panels
Measure one repeated panel and enter the required count.
Add joining yarn or outer borders as separately measured grams or as another piece with its own swatch.
Do not add the same border both as a fabric piece and as extra finishing grams.
Separate colors and leftover stock
For individually made single-color pieces joined later, connect each piece to its yarn group.
Leftovers from a different product are not interchangeable simply because the color name and mass match.
Subtract only stock you have confirmed is suitable; texture, fabric density and dye-lot compatibility still require your judgment.
The tool does not generate curved or three-dimensional patterns, complex increases and decreases, stranded floats or individual quantities for yarns held together.
It is an area-based purchase estimate, not a guarantee of finished size or actual usage.
If your pattern provides a yarn requirement, compare it with this estimate and investigate mismatched dimensions or swatch conditions before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for crochet?
Yes, the area model can be used for single-yarn rectangular pieces when your sample uses the same yarn, hook and stitch pattern.
Can I leave stitch and row gauge blank?
Use 0 to omit either reference count; yarn weight still uses the whole sample area and dry weight.
Can I replace one 50 g yarn with another?
Equal mass does not imply equal fiber, length, thickness or fabric density, so make a new swatch with the replacement yarn.
My swatch has a different border pattern
Its combined weight may not represent the target fabric density; measure a separate uniform sample of the intended stitch pattern.
What reserve percentage should I use?
There is no universal recommendation here; compare scenarios after considering sample variation, finishing work and the possibility of buying more matching yarn.
Why not round each piece separately?
Rounding pieces that share yarn separately can add unnecessary skeins; their grams are pooled before rounding once.
Why is the total budget unavailable?
Check prices for every color that needs an order; an unpriced yarn with a zero-skein order does not block the budget.
Does the plan guarantee matching dye lots?
No, it records quantities and notes only; ask the seller to confirm the product, color and dye lot before purchasing.

Save the TXT report to retain product specifications, piece dimensions, swatch measurements, gauge, yarn orders and reserve comparisons.
After completing the project, compare the recorded estimate with actual usage to evaluate how well your sample represented the fabric.
Convert dimensions from other units before calculating again.
