What does this Korean insurance age calculator check?
A birthday alone may not tell you which age an insurance quote uses.
Korean life and health insurance standard terms round chronological age at a six-month threshold.
The date used to establish the contract age can therefore affect both the quoted premium and the product’s entry-age range.
Use this Korea 2026 worksheet for yourself, your partner or parents, with up to five people.
It separates current insurance age, age on the planned contract date, the next age step-up day, the cutoff for keeping the current age and the last date within an entered product age limit.
It helps you identify which dates to confirm with the insurer.
Your next stepConfirm the contract-age date and inclusive entry limits, then request two quotes with identical benefits and payment terms.
Prepare health disclosures and underwriting documents using your chosen lead time.
The worksheet does not approve an application or guarantee a premium.
Chronological age, insurance age and the step-up day
Chronological age advances on birthdays.
Under the insurance-age convention, the remaining period after the last birthday is rounded down when shorter than six months and rounded up by one year from six months onward.
The two ages can differ, and reaching a birthday does not necessarily increase insurance age again.
Less than six months after the birthday
Chronological and insurance age match.
For a person born on 1983-03-01, a new contract dated 2026-08-31 has chronological age 43 and insurance age 43.
The six-month step-up day
From 2026-09-01, insurance age is 44 while chronological age remains 43.
The higher age applies on that day itself.
The following birthday lets chronological age catch up; it does not add another year to insurance age.
The next step-up shown here is strictly later than the reference date.
When the reference date is a step-up day, the calculator flags that the higher age already applies and shows next year’s step-up as the next event.
Read the reference-date and planned-date ages separately.
Inputs and confirmed, assumed or unknown evidence
- Reference date and birth date: these establish current age and countdowns.
The today button uses the date in Korea; enter a different date to review a historical example.
Birth dates after the reference date and nonexistent dates are rejected.
- Planned contract-age date: enter the date the particular product uses to establish age.
Do not mark it confirmed until you know whether application, acceptance, first payment or another contractual date controls.
- Product age basis and bounds: confirm that the product uses insurance age, then enter inclusive minimum and maximum ages.
A product using chronological age or an unknown basis does not receive an insurance-age eligibility decision.
- Quotes and payment terms: enter monthly KRW quotes for the reference date’s current age and the immediately following insurance age.
Match coverage amounts, benefits and payment periods.
No market premium or assumed increase rate is filled in automatically.
Confirmed means checked against product wording or insurer information; assumed means a scenario still requiring confirmation.
Unknown evidence withholds affected amounts or age-range checks and ignores hidden default values.
A confirmed KRW 0 quote is different from an unknown quote.
Confirmed and assumed evidence dates are required and cannot follow the reference date.
Evidence status and dates remain in the saved worksheet.
Product last entry date and preparation target
The product’s age window
If the maximum includes insurance age 43, its last age-eligible date is the day before insurance age becomes 44.
A minimum of 40 starts on the day insurance age becomes 40.
Minimum age 0 uses birth as the reference starting date; this does not establish that a product accepts every newborn or every benefit.
Keeping the current age and preparing documents
The current-age cutoff is the day before the next step-up.
With known or assumed product bounds, the preparation target uses the earlier of that cutoff and the product’s last entry date.
Your entered calendar lead days are subtracted to find the preparation reference date.
No future target is created if the product minimum starts after that cutoff or the cutoff has passed.
Being within the age range checks only one condition.
It does not confirm health disclosures, occupation restrictions, benefit underwriting, coverage limits or acceptance.
The initial 7-day preparation value is a changeable user assumption, not a statutory period or an insurer’s average processing time.
How to use the worksheet
- Enter the reference date and each member’s actual birth date and optional alias.
Check each planned contract date separately when adding family members.
- Confirm which contract date determines insurance age and record the evidence date.
Keep an unverified date assumed or unknown.
- Enter the product age basis and inclusive minimum and maximum.
Review benefits separately if their entry ages differ.
- Enter the quote evidence date and the current-age and next-age monthly premiums.
Select fixed non-renewable, renewable or unknown premium type.
You can calculate dates without quotes.
- Adjust the calendar lead days and calculate.
Read step-up-today, maximum-age, preparation-date and assumption warnings first.
- Save or print the worksheet for an insurer discussion.
The calendar export omits birth dates, aliases and premiums.
Editing inputs requires recalculation before saving again.
Worked example: quotes before and after a step-up
The synthetic example uses reference date 2026-08-20, birth date 1983-03-01 and planned contract date 2026-08-25.
With assumed entry bounds of insurance ages 0–43, the next step-up is 2026-09-01 and the last product entry date is 2026-08-31.
There are 12 days until step-up.
Subtracting 7 preparation days from the cutoff gives 2026-08-24.
Synthetic 20-year fixed monthly premium comparison in KRW| Quote | Monthly KRW | 240-month KRW |
|---|
| Current-age quote | 266,000 | 63,840,000 |
| Next-age quote | 271,000 | 65,040,000 |
| Difference: next−current | 5,000 | 1,200,000 |
Total difference = monthly difference × 12 × payment years.
Here that is KRW 5,000 × 12 × 20.
The two monthly amounts appeared in an FSS example for a particular life policy in 2023; they are not 2026 quotations or market averages.
The worksheet’s dates and entry bounds are synthetic and do not identify an actual product.
A lower next-age quote produces a negative difference; equal quotes produce zero.
Renewable or unknown premium types show only a monthly difference because future premiums cannot be assumed constant.
When the planned contract age lies outside the current/next-age quote pair, obtain a new quote for that planned date.
Interpreting dates and result states
The current-age cutoff and product last entry date answer different questions.
One preserves the current insurance-age bracket; the other identifies the end of the entered product’s maximum-age window.
They may be years apart when the current age is well below the product limit.
Compare them separately before deciding how urgently to act.
Unknown or withheld means missing evidence, rather than zero cost or rejected eligibility.
Below-minimum results point to a starting date; above-maximum results require checking actual product options and wording.
A past preparation reference date is a prompt to confirm real processing time and submission availability, rather than proof that application is impossible.
When family totals are available
The family total difference requires fixed-premium totals for every member.
One unknown quote or renewable premium withholds the combined figure instead of presenting a partial sum as the whole.
Available individual dates and monthly differences remain visible.
Practical family planning scenarios
Reviewing a parent’s protection policy
The insurance step-up may be closer than the birthday.
Check the maximum age and health disclosure documents first, then arrange any medical records a family member needs to obtain.
Consider needed coverage and payment affordability alongside the age-based quote.
Coordinating two partners
A shared consultation date does not create a shared step-up day or entry window.
Record each person separately and confirm the earliest preparation target first.
A family premium difference is a separate measure from the actual household monthly budget.
Compare waiting periods, reduced-benefit periods, waiver conditions and renewal terms as well as insured amounts and benefits.
Do not omit required health disclosures to meet a date.
If replacing an existing policy, confirm acceptance and coverage commencement before allowing a coverage gap to arise.
Month-end, leap years and post-issue anniversaries
Calendar handling is an assumption to confirm
Months are added directly to the original birth date, clamping a nonexistent day to that month’s final day.
An August 31 birthday therefore uses February 28 or 29 as its reference step-up.
For a February 29 birth, a non-leap birthday is represented by February 28, while the step-up remains August 29 because the original birth date remains the anchor.
Repeatedly adding to already-clamped dates would shift the result, so the original anchor is preserved.
This is not a universal interpretation guaranteed across insurers.
Confirm the actual insurer date for leap-day and month-end births.
Weekends and public holidays do not automatically extend a date here.
Preparation lead time counts calendar days, and submission-hour cutoffs are excluded.
After policy issue, the standard terms advance insurance age on each contract anniversary.
Birth-based step-up dates in this calculator compare new-contract timing.
They do not mean an existing policy automatically reprices on that day or matures on a birth-based step-up.
Check existing renewal and maturity dates in the policy schedule and wording.
Checks before saving or speaking to the insurer
- Confirm the actual contract-date definition before moving an application earlier.
Submission alone may not secure an insurance age.
- Separate insurance age from any specific chronological-age rule.
Statutory or individual policy exceptions take precedence.
- Entry bounds are product-specific inputs, not universal limits.
Do not copy one benefit’s limit into another product without checking.
- Quote totals are nominal sums for the entered fixed monthly premiums.
They do not model discounting, surrender values, tax or investment returns.
- The TXT and printed worksheet contain entered birth dates and quotes.
Check where you save or share them; use the calendar file when those details are unnecessary.
- Recalculate after changing inputs.
Exports are disabled for stale results so an old worksheet is not mistaken for the updated plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does Korea still use insurance age after age standardization?
The verified life and health insurance standard terms retain six-month rounding, subject to any specific statutory or individual-policy age rule.
Does the old age apply on the step-up day itself?
No; the higher age applies from the six-month boundary, and the next step-up shown on that day is in the following year.
Does insurance age increase again on the birthday?
Generally no for this new-contract comparison: chronological age catches up to the insurance age that already increased at the step-up.
Does applying before step-up guarantee the lower quote?
No; confirm the controlling contract-age date and quote validity because application and contract dates can differ.
Does a maximum age of 43 mean the day before the 44th birthday?
An insurance-age maximum of 43 generally ends the day before insurance age becomes 44 at the six-month step-up, which differs from the chronological birthday cutoff.
Can renewable premiums be totaled over 20 years?
Only the quoted monthly difference is shown because future renewal premiums are unknown; full-period totals are withheld.
Are February 29 and day-31 dates definitive?
No; the calculator supplies an explicit calendar assumption that must be checked against the insurer’s actual dates and wording.
Does this determine an existing policy’s maturity date?
No; check contract-anniversary, renewal and maturity rules in the existing schedule and wording separately.
