Korean imported car purchase cost and total ownership cost

This English guide follows the Korean calculator logic and preserves the Korean won amounts, statutory thresholds, tax rates, fee tables, vehicle categories, and operating assumptions used by the source page.

Import-stage tax logic

The imported-car model keeps the Korean customs and vehicle-tax sequence from the source page. When FTA does not apply, customs duty is 8 percent. Korea-EU FTA brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Porsche, and Korea-US FTA treatment for Tesla, use 0 percent customs duty, while Lexus and other non-FTA cases can carry the 8 percent customs duty path.

The individual consumption tax rate is normally 5 percent, but the source page applies the temporary 3.5 percent reduced individual consumption tax through June 30, 2026. Education tax is calculated on individual consumption tax, VAT is 10 percent on the accumulated import-stage amount, and the Korean formula treats these taxes before the registration-stage burden.

  • Acquisition tax is 7 percent for a non-commercial passenger car.
  • EV individual consumption tax relief is KRW 3 million, and EV acquisition-tax relief is KRW 1.4 million.
  • Hybrid acquisition-tax relief is KRW 400,000.
  • Registration fee is KRW 50,000, and dealer agency fee is KRW 300,000 when that option is included.

Ownership cost, maintenance, and residual value

The Korean page does not stop at purchase tax. It adds annual insurance, parking, fuel or charging, brand maintenance, vehicle tax, depreciation, and residual value over the selected ownership period. Brand service costs are preserved: Mercedes-Benz official service is KRW 1.5 million per year in the source table, Porsche KRW 1.8 million, and Tesla KRW 500,000.

Residual value is brand-specific. Porsche residual value is 85 percent after year 1 and 58 percent after year 5, while BMW and Audi fall faster in the Korean comparison. That means an imported car with a higher purchase tax can still have a lower 5-year TCO if depreciation is materially slower.

  • Public bond purchase cost differs by registration region, with Seoul highest in the Korean guide.
  • A KRW 60 million car can change by about KRW 1.4 million when the temporary individual consumption tax cut ends.
  • The calculator maps brand selection to FTA treatment, but users should still confirm origin and contract details.
