The financial choice, however, is not simply a purchase price versus one monthly rental payment. It does not insert a market-average stairlift price. Rail geometry, site work, equipment classification, and contract scope vary too much for one published figure to represent a particular home.
Short recovery period
Prioritise the minimum term, confirmed early-exit cost, return date, and deposit deductions. A low opening payment does not prove that a short rental is inexpensive.
Long-term ageing at home
Compare accumulated rent with purchase maintenance, repair reserve, battery events, removal, and a defensible residual value over several possible durations.

Normalise the two proposals before entering a price
Two proposals are comparable only when they cover the same stair, the same user need, and the same opening and closing work. Record whether the device is a seat or wheelchair platform, whether the rail is straight or curved, whether it is indoors or outdoors, the connected floors, measured rail length, and number of turns. These context fields do not apply automatic price multipliers. They are a scope-control note that helps the family identify an omitted turn, landing, power supply, folding section, call station, or reinstatement obligation.

How to build the purchase and rental inputs
Purchase proposal
- Separate equipment and rail, installation and delivery, and other initial work.
- Enter only support that is confirmed for this product and this purchase.
- Budget monthly planned maintenance and a separate repair or consumables reserve.
- Use the supplier's written battery price and cycle; a zero cycle disables replacements.
- Add end removal and reinstatement, then subtract only a supportable resale or residual value.
Rental contract

Confirmed support is not the same as an expected application
Korean long-term-care welfare equipment, assistive-device services, local housing modification programmes, and private support can have different eligible people, listed products, construction boundaries, payment timing, and duplication rules. Do not infer a benefit from age, disability status, a database search, or a consultation alone. Keep the input at zero until the responsible body confirms the applicable product and amount in writing. Purchase and rental support remain separate because one route may be eligible while the other is not.
Calculation method and timing rules
Opening costs occur at month zero. Electricity, rental payments, maintenance, and monthly repair reserves occur each month. Battery events occur at their entered cycle only when the event falls before the final month. Removal, residual value, deposit refund, and other closing cash flows occur at the end of the selected use period. The annual effective discount rate is converted to an effective monthly rate so that a payment in month 36 is not treated as though it occurred today.

Deposit opportunity cost
A fully refunded deposit cancels in the nominal cash total. It does not disappear from present value because cash leaves today and returns later. The difference represents the time value of money while the deposit is unavailable. The model does not assume a deduction: it uses the refund percentage entered from the contract and places the returned amount at the final month.
Equivalent monthly cost converts each alternative's present value into one level monthly comparison amount over the selected horizon. It is not a lender's instalment and not the provider's bill. The first purchase break-even month is the earliest month, from month 1 through month 120, when purchase present value is no more than rental present value. Battery events, a minimum term, deposit recovery, and residual value can cause the lead to reverse later, so the calculator also reports every crossover found in that search window.
A practical six-step workflow
- Choose several plausible use periods. Consider recovery after discharge, a possible move, the expected period of ageing at home, and changes in mobility rather than committing to one optimistic duration.
- Send identical site information to multiple providers. Supply the same stair photographs, dimensions, turns, landings, power location, environment, and user conditions.
- Decompose the purchase quotation. Separate equipment, installation, other works, warranty exclusions, maintenance, repairs, batteries, removal, and residual value.
- Mark rental inclusions and exclusions. Check deposit, setup, minimum term, batteries, call-outs, collection, reinstatement, inspection at return, and early termination wording.

Purchase has the lower 36-month present value in this fixture, but it requires KRW 7,300,000 more opening cash. A family that cannot safely fund the opening amount should not treat present-value leadership as a cash-budget answer. Conversely, when use beyond month 31 is likely and the maintenance and residual assumptions are supportable, the table reveals how accumulated rent can overtake ownership cost. Replace every fixture amount before making a real decision.

Preferred alternative and PV saving
This is the lower discounted lifecycle cost at the chosen duration. It does not evaluate clinical suitability, safe installation, available cash, or the value of flexibility.
Initial cash and base monthly cost
Initial cash measures the month-zero funding need. Base monthly cost shows regular entered expenses before periodic batteries and closing cash flows.
Break-even and crossover months
The first month answers when purchase initially becomes no more expensive. The full list warns when a later battery or terminal event reverses the lead again.
Monthly cash-flow detail
Use the month-by-month rows to identify battery events, early-exit cost, and terminal removal, refund, or residual value instead of relying only on a single total.
Use duration and repair sensitivity as decision gates
The duration table recalculates 12, 24, 36, and 60 months plus the selected horizon. It is especially useful when recovery, relocation, or future mobility is uncertain. A rental that leads at 12 months can become more expensive at 36 months, while a purchase that appears strong at 60 months may be a poor match when a move is likely next year. Record a probability range rather than pretending one duration is certain.
The 70%, 100%, and 130% sensitivity changes purchase repair reserve and battery cost together while holding the remaining assumptions constant. This does not predict failures. It tests whether the decision depends on an optimistic service assumption. Also run manual scenarios with residual value at zero, a lower deposit refund, higher rental exclusions, or a confirmed early-exit charge. If a modest change reverses the result, the next action is better evidence, not false precision.
Do not manufacture an early-exit formula
Contracts can use remaining rent, a fixed fee, a percentage, removal cost, deposit forfeiture, or a combination. The calculator uses the minimum term as a warning condition and applies only the total early-termination cost you explicitly enter. It does not automatically multiply remaining months by rent. This prevents a generic formula from contradicting the signed contract.
Korean safety and inspection boundary checked in 2026
The marketing name does not settle legal classification
Article 3(1)(3) of the Enforcement Decree of the Elevator Safety Management Act, effective February 1, 2026, describes a wheelchair lift as equipment that transports a wheelchair user or a person with reduced mobility in a carrier along a vertical or inclined path. Attached Table 1 of the Enforcement Rule distinguishes vertical and inclined wheelchair lifts. A generic seat stairlift and an inclined wheelchair platform lift should not automatically be treated as the same regulated product. Actual classification depends on structure, certification, and installation, and must be confirmed for the proposed device.
If the proposed equipment is classified within the elevator safety system, certification, installation inspection, periodic or special inspection, self-inspection, and maintenance obligations may affect both safety and cost. The Korea Elevator Safety Agency fee page separates inspection types for inclined wheelchair lifts and varies fees by factors such as travel length and certification route. The calculator deliberately does not hard-code those fees. Add the provider's and agency's current applicable amounts to other initial work or monthly maintenance after classification has been confirmed.

The 2026 National Health Insurance Service notice on long-term-care welfare-equipment coverage provides benefits through listed item and beneficiary confirmation processes and includes a basic principle concerning products usable without installation construction. A fixed stairlift should therefore not be assumed eligible merely because a person has a long-term-care grade. Confirm the item, product, construction boundary, beneficiary document, amount, and payment timing directly with the responsible office.
The National Rehabilitation Center's Assistive Technology Center database can help identify products and support programmes, but discovery is not approval. Local government, disability, home-modification, or charitable programmes can impose residence, income, disability, building ownership, landlord-consent, product, invoice, prior-approval, and duplicate-support conditions. Enter only a final confirmed amount. If reimbursement arrives after installation, also prepare the gross opening cash requirement before support.
Common decision scenarios
Use may end six to twelve months after hospital discharge
Test a duration below the minimum term. Confirm the total early-exit amount, collection date, reinstatement work, and deposit deduction. Compare those costs with the purchase removal and realistic resale path rather than assuming rental must win.
A parent plans to remain in the home for three to five years
Read the 36- and 60-month rows with the crossover months. Recheck purchase at 130% repair-and-battery cost and at zero residual value. A purchase lead that survives both is more robust than one created by an optimistic resale estimate.
The stair is curved or connects several floors
Providers may interpret turns, landings, folding sections, and rail reuse differently. Use one measured drawing, ask whether removal damages finishes, and require written support for any claimed resale or reusable-rail value.
The proposal is for a wheelchair platform
Confirm first whether the actual product is an inclined wheelchair lift under the Korean elevator safety framework. Add applicable certification, installation, inspection, self-inspection, and maintenance costs before comparing the same equipment type under purchase and rental contracts.

Why is there no default average stairlift price?

What battery replacement cycle should I enter?
There is no national value in this model. Product design, use frequency, charging environment, temperature, and warranty matter. Use the manufacturer or installer written cycle and price, then review the 70% and 130% sensitivity cases.
Does a Korean long-term-care grade guarantee stairlift support?
No. Confirm the current listed benefit item, beneficiary document, product and installation conditions, and amount with the National Health Insurance Service. Apply the same written-confirmation rule to disability and local programmes.
Can I compare a seat lift and a wheelchair platform in one result?
