What is the dividend yield calculator?

This calculator estimates dividend yield, annual dividend income, after-tax income, payout ratio, dividend growth, and monthly cash-flow equivalents. It is useful for Korean, US, and REIT dividend investments.

Dividend formulas and grade bands

Yield, growth, payout, and tax

  • Dividend yield = annual dividend / stock price x 100.
  • Dividend growth = (this year dividend - last year dividend) / last year dividend x 100.
  • Payout ratio = dividends / net income x 100. Below 30% often means reinvestment focus, 30% to 60% is healthy, 60% to 80% requires caution, and above 80% can indicate cut risk.
  • Korean dividend tax is 15.4%, composed of 14% income tax and 1.4% local income tax.
  • US dividends commonly face 15% withholding under the Korea-US treaty before Korean reporting details are considered.

Yield interpretation

  • Below 3% is low yield.
  • 3% to 5% is a balanced range for many dividend portfolios.
  • Above 5% is high and requires a stability check.
  • Above 8% is very high and may signal dividend-cut risk unless the structure, such as a REIT, explains it.
  • Dividend aristocrats generally mean 25+ years of increases, while dividend champions are often 50+ years.

Worked examples

Korean preferred stock and US dividend stock

  • Samsung preferred-style example: KRW 70,000 price, KRW 2,500 annual dividend, 100 shares, last-year dividend KRW 2,400, payout 45%. Yield is 3.57%, pre-tax dividend KRW 250,000, after-tax KRW 211,500, growth 4.17%, and monthly after-tax equivalent KRW 17,625.
  • Coca-Cola-style example: USD 60 or about KRW 78,000 price, USD 1.84 or about KRW 2,400 annual dividend, 50 shares, last-year dividend about KRW 2,300, payout 78%. Yield is 3.07%, pre-tax dividend KRW 120,000, after-tax KRW 101,520, growth 4.35%, and monthly equivalent KRW 8,460.

REIT example and strategies

  • REIT example: KRW 15,000 price, KRW 1,200 annual dividend, 200 shares, last-year dividend KRW 1,150, payout 90%. Yield is 8%, pre-tax dividend KRW 240,000, after-tax KRW 203,040, growth 4.35%, and monthly equivalent KRW 16,920.
  • REITs often distribute 90% or more of profits by law, so payout ratios should be interpreted differently from ordinary operating companies.
  • Dividend strategies include aristocrat investing, high-yield screening, dividend-growth investing, and DRIP reinvestment.
  • The guide compares Korean market average yield around 2% to 3% and S&P 500 around 1.5% to 2%.
